I stand by my statement. In your first post you said you had a "1987 Blazer with a 350 TBI engine".

1987 Blazers with a 350 TBI engine had 210 hp. The base engine was a 305. The 305 TBI was 170 HP.

Before you order parts you will need to make certain which engine you have.

Personally, I wouldn't rebuild the 305. The 350 is a better and more powerful engine. As I said in my previous post I think I'd look for a used engine, and it would be a 350.

I see a lot of ads for vehicles with "rebuilt" engines, transmissions, etc. The problem is that the word "rebuilt" means different things to different people. There is no standard of quality. It's the same thing the the word "restored".

You can't quantify exactly what a "quality" rebuild will cost without knowing the exact condition of the various internal parts. A "quality" rebuild would include re-sizing the connecting rods and installing new rod bolts. It would also include align honing (or potentially align boring) the block. Furthermore a "quality" rebuild would include all high quality parts, including high quality gaskets. The assembly process would include checking and verifying clearances. Assembling components to the correct torque in the proper sequence.

I'm a big fan of OEM parts, and especially so of OEM sheet metal. I don't like the cheap as possible approach, and refuse to do it. By and large you get what you pay for.

If you want to build an engine using the cheapest possible parts, and the cheapest possible machine shop; go for it.

Please let us know how it turns out.
 
I'll have to dig the numbers up later. Numbers state 170hp 350.

I'll let you know how the rebuild goes planning to do it later this week.
 
Damn your prices are high

Prices in my area
To hot tank, mag, install cam bearings,install soft plugs and bore and hone=$175 no tax
polish crank $20
rebuild kit $338 rv cam,hi volume oil pump, flat top hypereutectic pistons and moly rings.
$150 for both heads rebuilt exchange.

I am surprised anyone outside of high performance motors rebuilds any of them in your area. You can pick up a brand new GM crate motor for $1700. $2k in machine work sounds excessive.

not getting the crank ground, nor balanced

prices i posted are form one of the top machine shops here, there are places that will do it much less, but id never use them after a few bad experiances. there are also very few places in cali that still hot tank, epa issues.

I can understand that, it just doesn't makes sense to rebuild a motor if your machine costs are more then a new motor from the manufacturer with all new parts. I'm surprised these places stay in business unless they are getting a lot of performance engine builds.
 
Should be getting my motor back from the machine shop either today or tomorrow.

Its cost me $682 so far. Now just need to get the damn thing back together and back in the truck.

i very rarley build stock engines. so the places i use do sspecalize in performance machine work. you gotta watch some of theose crate engines as they all dont use new parts. even the gm crate engines you should take pan off and check to make sure all the rods and mains got torqued, along with the heads to proper specs. i have had 2 people come to me to do a engine swap using a new gm crate and i poped the pan to check it out and found 2 loose rods bolts in one and some loose mains and rods in the other.
