Engine Replacement Advice Request

Jegs has someone build them for them. You'd probably have to call and ask

Edit: What /\ said

They might not be able to tell you. Confidentiality between the two companies.

@sweetk30 got this L31: https://www.ebay.com/itm/GM-OEM-NEW...296304?hash=item4636cfc330:g:c3kAAOSw1UdcvxpQ
He can chime in with his satisfaction (I just remember him posting about it)

Other reviews on Jegs have their reman'd engines as being made by ATK. Check these lower star reviews, would make me hesitant to buy one: https://www.jegs.com/i/JEGS/059/0282/10002/-1
I read all those ATK reviews, then purchased from GM

The third engine i was referring to is the basic, "bread and butter" crate/goodwrench 350 that's been around longer than the other two:

https://www.jegs.com/i/Chevrolet-Performance/809/12681429/10002/-1
It's a 1978-ish, LM-1-ish 350 with flat lifters that you would find in a maro, chevelle or nova out of the factory etc.

Since you're already running an elec fuel pump, the L31 seems like the better engine to go with out of these 2, although i think the goodwrench 350 would do ok too.

2) You should, then, research where the dipstick is on these engines. Being that you're trying to do an "TBI replacement" (?),then the newer (87 and later) engines should be compatible(?).

3) May want to call jegs to see who/where the jegs remans are remanufactured at. If Mercury Marine then YES! i say go for it. If anyone else, i'd pass.

Very sorry, can't discuss further until the weekend and even that is not guaranteed.

my L31 is running just fine . she used 1/2 a qrt in the first 500 miles of break in for oil . i even used break in oil from brad penn with the high levels of the good stuff .

now i have 3-4k miles on it and am using it as a work truck like a k30 should be used she is working good . had to add a little oil again but nothing crazy . i figure its just the engine sealing up .

Hey Colby, welcome back.
I will put this out there:
I vote for the L31, but I suggest you actually get the induction system from a junkyard and run it like it was supposed to be factory.
I have it in my 97 van and the power, driveability and fuel mileage is worth it.
And it's a bolt in, you just need to get the intake and ecm/wiring sourced and setup.
Gets you close to LS territory without the hassle of changing everything, and you get a crate engine.
Congrats on the kid by the way, I got 2 boys in the meantime, 2 and 3

Great to see you back!
I did the exact replacement gm crate. It has been fine. There was a high output version that I should have stepped up to. It has been about 5 yrs, but mine was $2k shipped if I remember correctly.

L31 dipstick goes in the passenger side of the block. I believe TBI is the same, but the later dipsticks are longer and the handle is much easier to reach from the front. Last I was looking, still easy to find in wrecking yards.

I like the L31 as a replacement option, but they do introduce issues as mentioned previously, that a crate TBI (L05?) wouldn't, in terms of ease of install. No way would I ever consider going back to a two piece rear main/perimeter bolt valve cover early setup. My opinion. I dont like leaks.

Hows your trans in this truck? Only reason i ask, is that if it's still the 700r4, and it's been sitting, you may run into issues.

I know you want to keep things simple, but if you end up needing motor AND trans, a combo LS type swap might put you miles ahead....

What was involved in your swap?

Congrats to you, too, on the children! What's the story on setting up a different ECM?

It is a 700r4, but it's only got about 25K miles on it. I dream of swapping back to an SM465 transmission at some point. I thought that was a really fun transmission to drive. I used it with my 6.2L diesel, and I've driven one behind a TBI350 too. But I digress...

If that is the same engine I bought a couple of years ago that engine went way up in price. I bought a brand new GM Goodwrench crate engine with the same specs for about $1600 a couple of years ago. Here is another link to basiclly the same brand new crate engine.

https://sdparts.com/i-19928728-gm-engines-12568758-tbi-350-lo5-new-crate-engine.html

That's about $100 savings over Summit. Summit price matches, which opens up my options a bit. Thanks for the link!!

The L31 was the first generation vortec engine so it is a mpfi, which gets smoother better power in original configuration.
If you use it with tbi you get better than a crate tbi engine but lose some of the power from a full L31 setup.
You can get that from pnp for a couple bills.

Also if you want to go sm465, I have both a 205 32 setup, and a 208 32 spline setup complete minus pedals.

I'll keep that in mind about the transmissions.

I'm still not totally clear on the L31. Can I just put it in there with an appropriate intake manifold, hook up all my TBI350 stuff, and be on my merry way? Or do I have to do something to the computer?
