Engine #\'s

I have my BBC on a stand in my garage, but having trouble seeing the #'s. Where exactlty should I look on the engine and once I get it, how can I get OEM info about it (original vehicle, year, etc)? Thanks.

EDIT: It's amazing what a flashlight will do!!! Anyway I found the following info/#'s on it:

Bellhousing:
3999290

CONV 1

GM9

I 20 71 (Found out means Sep 20, 1971 production date)

Front Pass Side of Block:
CE358413

So, can anyone decifer this for me?

Thanks!!

Suffix code should tell you what you want to know.

Will help you deceipher your suffix code. I *thought* that number you listed last (CExxxxx) would be it, but don't see CE listed.

Re: Engine #\'s

Okay, let's see if I'm on the right track. I got this from the MorTec site:

3999290....396.......68-69...2 or 4 bolt, Truck
3999290....402.......70-72...2 or 4 bolt, Truck
3999290....402.......72......2 or 4 bolt, Passenger

I also found "CE" as a suffix code means "Crate Engine" or "Chevy Engine". This was used when the engine was either a warranty replacement or an aftermarket purchase.

I guess it's time to go back to Checker & find the correct water pump based on this info.

Re: Engine #\'s

HA! Thats pretty funny, my 402 is the exact same casting # and production date. Except mine was made in January '71. Cool $hit. /forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif

KidJethro,

Maybe you can help me out. I can't seem to find the correct short water pump for this. Do you have a short or long & what year/vehicle do you use when you get parts?

I am assuming that since the casting #'s are the same that the blocks would be identical.

Thanks.
