Engine smoke 350 help

Good point Diesel4me.

If the intake valve won't open. No air to compress.

You guys are doing nothing but giving this guy false hope. He has already found a spark plug electrode smashed closed which means there is something major going on in that cylinder. To the OP, just tear the thing apart already to access the damage or just keep driving it until it blows.

I have already had the valve covers off and all the rocker arms and rods seemed to be moving normally and in sync with the others.

Your problem is INSIDE the engine (somewhere in the cylinder, piston/rings, valves).

I was just trying to help,in case it was something simple--I wasn't aware he'd already checked the valve train....I once had a 283 break a rocker arm and it went from a nice running engine that burned zero oil,to a rough running smoker in a matter of 5 minutes,I thought something serious had gone wrong, and was all set to swap in a 350 I had, till my brother suggested I do some investgation....turned out just one intake rocker snapped in two,and the push rod bent--easy fix for free, with used spare parts..................................................................................................I've had engines that closed up the plug gaps when carbon broke loose too,its not always a indicator of disaster...when I see splattered melted aluminum on a plug, then I'm pretty sure something BAD is going on in that cylinder...

maybe the rod is snapped off just above the crank..... and the remaining bearing end is still going for a ride on the crank.....keeping the oil pressure stable......

and when the rod snapped off, it sent the piston up into the cylinder closing up the spark plug gap... now the cylinder is sitting there dead and thus
zero compression....

Point being.... just as 4x4HIGH said....we can speculate all day on why it's not building compression on that cylinder,,,but at the end of the day,,,It needs to be torn down and inspected for the problem.:waytogo:

Thanks for all your help guys, I am going to try to find some time to take the head off, but It's my first time going that deep so wish me luck haha!

You got it! It's just nuts and bolts. You have plenty of support here Anyways

Seems like alot at first, but it gets pretty easy after you do it a couple times.

They've been around forever and most here are intimatly familiar with the SBC so you have quite the resource for help if you need it.

I wish I had known of this site before I started tearing into stuff.
