Engine swapping a 454 Vortec and keeping the factory TBI

After watching about 10 videos of how to rebuild a TBI, not one showed this piece in it. It looks like a ujoint C clip. How it ended up in the pressure regulator is bizarre. Is this like the kingpin DW fix? Just throw a washer behind the spring for more pressure maybe? In any case, it’s not going back in and the top half is all together. Hopefully there will be some time after work to finish this and then try it out.
 
I've heard of shims being used to bump fuel pressure however that is an unusual shim someone used.

Is there a performance boost associated with this? I have been questioning myself as to why I am still using TBI today. It seemed like the wise decision for a guy with a busy family life. And it does seem to be easy enough to work on but there seem to be better options out there these days.

Generally you can get a little more fuel and better atomization with increased fuel pressure. It appears that adjustable fuel regulators are available for the TBI systems however a shim or stiffer spring can also bump the pressure. I'm not very familiar with the TBI system so I can't provide any specific info about this system.

Lots of variables. The closer fuel pressure is to 13PSI, apparently the better it will run. GM says 9-13 is the range that is ok, but people have said the closer it gets to 9, the worse it runs.

Outside of that, messing with fuel pressure can open a can of worms.
 
So some good news. The TBI is all rebuilt and the fuel pump is now a EP381. When I removed the old fuel pump, the rubber hose connecting it to the sending unit looked and felt more like a sponge. It would fall off just by turning the pump upside down. Pretty sure it was releasing the fuel pump pressure so it wouldn't stay running. The new AC Delco pump came with the new rubber hose. Put it all together and it started right up and ran great. Happy St. Patrick's Day!
 
Also found an NV4500 to put behind the 454. Now, the question is what transfer case. I could use the round pattern NP205 that's in it now or switch to an NP241 w. SYE that I have as well. I thought there was notching involved with using the 205 whereas the 241 would be bolt on affair after I change the input to 32 spline. Any thoughts as to the pros and cons of either would be appreciated.

205 vs 241 is a good question. That depends on what you want to do with the truck. If you aren't in need of the gear to hear strength of the 205 the 241 is not a bad choice. Better low range too.

I'm running a 241 behind my 4500 and big block. I really like the combination. Shifts nice and the gearing is good for the wheeling I do.
