. . . . dual pattern TH350 in a 4x4? I have one out of a 1977 K20 I just cut up. It has the dual pattern bellhousing, but the BOP holes aren't drilled. Seemed odd.

I've got one that was in a 82 Jimmy I parted, it was swapped in at some point because it was originally a 700 truck.

I haven't seen that no. What I did think was funny was my 1969 truck 350 block has the top hole in the bellhousing drilled. So when I put the newer LS style 4L80E behind it I actually used all 7 bolt holes with my old block.

From what I understand, at the time all the big 3 used whatever they had at their disposal and put it in whatever they had laying around to make it worth selling. International is a great example of that, using all sorts of the big 3s trannys and parts to make it arrive at the car lot to make a few extra dollars on. Furthermore, Iv noticed that when dealing with the big 3, their side brands, Mercury, Pontiac, Plymouth, ect all used whatever they could just to get them off the assembly line and into the general public.

Now in a 4x4, no I have not seen that. However both olds cutlass' (74 and 76) I have parted out, had dual pattern trans. (cant remember for the life of me if they was th350 or th400) without the chevy holes drilled. The 74 had a 403 the other was a rocket 350. I thought that was strange but once I found out that a local dirt track guy would pay good money I didnt think about it anymore. He gave me $400 each for them, he also gave me $500 for the 403 all in unknown condition. He bought all 8 wheels and both rear axles for $300. The 350 had a rod threw the side of the block. Those 2 cars are the most profitable drag home freebies I have ever had. Its funny when a person cant get a dime out of a complete car but part it out and you can make a small fourtune (at least to a kid in his early 20's).

I also later had a 77 cutlass that I actually drove for a while and it had chevy 350 and th350. That was a suprise to me as well because I thought they didnt start using chevy engines until sometime in the 80's. But as far as I could tell it was all original. If it was swapped it was early in the cars life.

EDIT: maybe the 403 was a 400 or a 455? I dont know for sure, but 74 seams too old for a 403 now that I think about it
I have seen BOP *single pattern* trans turned into 4x4's (2 trucks with caddy engines). and Im pretty sure my Jeep gladiator has a BOP pattern but I dont know if its a th350 or th400...

I vote you build a caddy 500 and put that sucker to use!

Most of the dual pattern TH350's we sold at the junkyard came out of 78-82 Olds Cutlasses and Monto Carlos, and a few Buick Regals had them...never saw one in a 4x4 truck, but there is no reason one cant be used I suppose,if you swap in the short output shaft...I never saw one that didn't have bolt bolt patterns drilled however......................................................................................................................................................................................................Gm had some labor strikes around 1978 and that is when they started putting chevy 305's in just about all GM cars, you could buy a Pontiac Bonneville with one,or it might have a 301 or 350 pontiac ,same with olds, everyone "shared" engines to offset production line shortages.............................................................................................GM eventualy had class action lawsuits filed against them because some owners were very unhappy to find their Pontiac had a Olds or Chevy engine in it..thats when they started using the multi-pattern trany bellhousings too--it was nice for us parts swappers during that era, with the right motor mounts you could put just about any GM engine in anything!..............................................................................................AMC used the TH400 in Wagoneers and Jeeps, but it had their own bolt pattern in the bellhousing, everything else was GM and identical to a chevy though...

Pretty much all G bodys (IE: 78-88 Cutlass, Regal, Monte Carlo, Malibu, El camino,Grand National, etc) had dual pattern th350 and th200-4r's. I bet that those 4wd dual patterns were from or left over from when the olds 350 diesel was offered in the plant that said truck was born in.

I'm not 100% sure when the Olds 350 diesel was introduced--I am pretty sure my former boss's Caddy Seville with one was a '77,but I could be wrong...I think cars used them before trucks had them,I think 1980 may have been the first year GM trucks had them, they only sold them for a couple years before admitting failure and they came out with the 6.2 in 1982..................................................................................................I bet Stormis is right about the 4x4 TH350's with dual bell patterns being leftovers from the Olds 350 diesels!...
