QRP is cool too , low power can be fun as well .

While everyone is spending money on CB's , to maybe be able to talk a few extra miles ( 30-40 if you run a HUGE amp ) . I was able to get a repeater over 150 miles away with MaxPF's handheld radio with a whopping 5 watts on max .............into a homemade antenna I have maybe 6 bucks into :bow::bow:
 
What would be a good one to get? In other words, what the best bang for the buck radio out there...something I could use on a trail, and even on a highway, and get weather/emergency alerts and such

If your talking about CB's, the most importand thing is the antenna and coax - what you use and where you mount it. You only start with 4 watts, and if you loose half that to your antenna system the performance will suck.

Find a friendly Ham Radio person or a radio savey person with a good swr meeter and have them check and tune whatever you pick.

And where might I find one of the friendly guys? :D Because you are a hamster, does that mean you hate the guys with foot warmers and funny channels? :whistle:
 
To each their own. I have listened in on those "funny channels" and it's just garbage noise to me.

Intersting thing is, either the band is open or not. Beyond about 50 watts your just pissing off the neighbors fuzzing up the TV. Good thing is, those guys keep the FCC busy!

I'm allways happy to help Ham, CB'er whatever. If I can help them set the station up properly it's more enjoyment for them and less annoyance for the neighbors. Makes us all look better!

The bands were open yesterday . I sat and listened on 10 meters for awhile during the contest ( I didn't participate , just listening and learning ) and Argentina came in pretty good .

I hear a lot on 11 meters too , but its mostly hard to make out as its always Mexico or South America .
 
20 meters was nuts both days! I was finishing the lift Saturday and cleaning up the mess Sunday so I didn't get to play. Gotta do one hobby at a time!

And I decided to rip out my "export" radios and box them up . Father in law gave me a nice HTX-10 for 10 meters until I pass his little code test .

Going to find another non modifiable TRC-485 for trail use in the Blazer . And then all the rigs are "legal" :thumb:

Man , a radio is way off . I may save for a single band MFJ rig , or perhaps build a little something .

I did build a 10 meter antenna for use with our local 10m FM net on thursdays . With a HTX-10 , I can get across town . Band isn't always open yet though for distance .

The wife won't let me just "buy" a full blown rig for a while though :(
 
Watch the hamfests. I see decent old solid state hf rigs for $250 - $300 regularly. You don't need anything fancy just getting started in HF, in fact I think it is distracting having too many nobs to deal with.

10 Meter Rig - Cobra 200 GTL DX

I spent friday running around town trying to find a decent 10 meter only rig - finally ended up at my local 2 way repair shop. The old timers there started stocking the Corbra 200 GTL DX because it was extremely well built. It has a huge heat sink, very nice surface mount boards and "Real" transistors for power. Old guy talked for 20 minutes about it and comparing it to the other junk out there. :bow: Gonna pick one of these up when the tax return shows up.

Thought everyone would appreciate the info. Sounds like a great radio compared to some of the other RCI and Galaxy, Connex stuff.

A real 10 meter only rig , should have a VFO and not "channels" :thumb: You know this , your licensed :wink1:

Go on Ebay and buy a HTX-10 if you want a real 10 meter only mobile , its a lot cheaper too .
