this is my issue

i like to drive with my tailgate window down, but i get exhaust fumes coming in. my rear sliders are stuck closed, and it doesnt matter if my door windows are open or closed or the vent windows. if the back window is open i get fumes.

my exhaust exits out the sides behind the rear tire. it was straight cut and i choped it off and put turn downs on and it got a little better.

do i have to get it out past the tires or what??

thanks
mike

Nature of the beast. I had my tailpipes go straight out, Ive had them turned to the side, doesnt matter. Im running true duals with catco cats and dynamax muffs, thought about going to single exhaust to maybe help, dunno.

Mine is single out on driver's side....still get the exhaust coming in from tailgate window. I think any of the exhaust gets out and then swirls around the back of the area before dissipating.

The only 95% solution I've found is to take the top off. It eliminates the vortex behind the truck. Other than that, it's like he said...nature of the beast.

Mine are true duals with 45 degree tips out the rear bumper. It can get bad.

I have heard that a single exhaust straight out the side can be an improvement. The higher gas velocities (from a single pipe) can get it away from the truck and out of the slipstream.

I don't get any noticable fumes in my cab. I had my exhaust come out in front of the rear tires, but when I swapped from blocks to lift springs I had to cut them so the rear springs didn't hit.

You can try one of those air diverter / spoiler things that go on the top back or the top???

Unfortunately, the aerodynamics make the back window area a low pressure zone. Ever drive down a dusty road with the back window down? I believe that's the problem the rear airfoil thing was supposed to solve - or maybe to keep the back window cleaner. Like was said before, the problem is gone when the top is off. Other than that, EFI and a catalytic converter make it more bearable. :dunno:

well i am looking for a stock roof rack so i just might as well grab one of those air things too. it cant hurt to try, the holes are still up their, they are just pluged.

i feel better knowing its a common problem and im not the only one

Topper with slider windows. Open the sliders, angle the "vent" ones so they are angled out in the front.. no more fumes.

Or you can try angling the wind wings on the door out. Or maybe try putting the blower motor on high, doubt that would do any good though.

Only thing ive found is to have the sliders open and the vents angled out to suck air in. It works really well..

C'Mon, there is only one sure cure............

Vertical Stacks FTW!!

So.the "spoiler" on the roof near the rear window GM used failed to solve the problem?..I had one on my I added to my '75 K5 and it seemed to help a lot...my 72 K5 would suffocate you in 5 miles without one..

I don't know how well the spoiler works; but I have one on my Suburban. The back window still gets dirty, and when it's open, I still get fumes from my single exhaust. I don't usually drive with the window partially down, as I recall on my Wagoneer that was a no-no. The window could come off track! So I pretty much use the same thought on the Suburban; open fully or closed fully while driving.

I run mine part way down all the time. There's not really a track it could come out of. Unless something is broke.

Your Suburban is very nice man!....looks just like mine probably did back in ;85,its the same exact color combo as yours, dark blue with silver, and the red pinstripe!..

Over the years I've seen some shorter air scoops on the sides too. My exhaust comes out the sides behind the tires and its a problem when im on the trails, when the back tires come off a rock it wants to twist my exhaust off
