exhaust: Headers/Mufflers

I think I want to try those, or the auger style inserts
 
I would suggest no headers. If your manifolds do not leak at the head don't take them off. So many headers are just absolute junk. The flanges are so thin that they warp and do not hold a seal. It also makes spark plugs difficult to access if they aren't bent well. They get rusty even if they are ceramic and look pretty awful. If your dead set on it make sure you get stainless. It's worth the money and with how much work it is to put headers on you will regret it if you don't.

I only run glass packs. They are inexpensive. They take up very little space and are therefor easy to work around and allow routing of exhaust that is more tucked away. Your truck will not sound like a mustang. I personally like the backfiring and raw deep sound you get.

Don't know how far you plan on taking it, but we have run countless setups on the dyno and the consistent front runner is 3 from each header to an x pipe to dual 3" with magnaflow mufflers. This is what I will be doing on mine, with the 14229 muffler, and tailpipes slightly bent behind the rear tires to keep gases from coming in through the rear window while open.
 
For the OP, I don't see an answer as to what you want it to sound like?

Personally, I have zero interest in hearing the exhaust, going to get some Hedman Stainless mufflers (have ceramics now, hate coatings) probably 2.5" Y to a 3" single in/out Walker Quietflow SS (although there are some dual inlet/single outlet 2.5"/3" mufflers made), and a resonator in there somewhere.

Reasoning for me is duals are more expensive, more of a hassle to install, and more of a hassle to work around. Running fairly stock 6.2L dual exhaust now, except the headers of course. The stock mufflers sounded good while they lasted.
 
I have run the factory setup on my 88 with the exhaust cut off behind the cat and a turn-down welded in. It was surprisingly decent. Not too loud, but sounded like she was breathing a little deeper.

Current setup is tri-Y full length headers with 2.5" true dual and Flowmaster Super 40s, no cats. Deep, loudish, no drone. Exhaust exits diagonally out the back corners. I dig it, but as with all these setups, it's a preference thing and you may not get it on your first try unless you find a setup you love on someone elses truck and just copy it.

BTW, while I'm sure 3" headers and dual exhaust will win the HP battle, traditional exhaust theory says that you will compromise bottom end torque for top end HP. For me, that's a losing deal. But if you're mud racing or whatever, maybe worth it.
