exhaust out the hood?

i brought one home at 2am one time, and had to unload it off the trailer to go back to the track to get another. fired it up to back it off the trailer, and the neighbor guy comes out... in his underwear... to tell me how sweet it sounded. :screwy:
 
Back in the old days (about 2 days before dirt was invented:D ) we used to have rubber balls we'd stick in the ends of our pipes when not running to keep all the dust, crap, rain, or your favorite beverage out of them. If you cork your pipes as soon as you shut down the motor it helps keep everything cooling out at the same rate. Supposedly preventing warped valves, cracked heads ect.
If you do cork them with balls, remember to run a string or light cable through the middle of each ball, so you can pull it back out of the pipe if it gets pushed in to far. Also makes them easier to use and keep track if you tie the ends of the pull strings on each side together.

Don't bother with the string, just start the motor, and blow those sucker out of there! :saweet: :saweet:
 
if you're going to be clearing the hood with the pipes, they're plenty long. you wont have any problem with cold air rushing in and warping the valves. we've run in everything from dry dusty conditions, to rain and snow. no problems in the 8 years that i've been building derby cars, and we run shorter headers generally.

another thing to take into consideration, the tempratures at which our engines operate. a 20 minute heat, with no radiator will send temps through the roof. your truck, no matter how hard you beat it will never get to those temps. we've actually hooked up a temp gauge once, on a 300* gauge, it was pegged.

since you're not getting that hot, you'll have even less problems with warping valves.
