Some have seen my CCLB I built with an 8.1 swap into it. Currently I have headman headers on it that have 3" collectors. So I did all my own exhaust and have 3" tube off the headers that come to a Y pipe just past the t-case. the Y-pipe converts the diameter from 3" to 3.5". Then it's a single 3.5" into a flowmaster 40 series muffler (mine is actually the "race" version muffler per summit), then 3.5" all the way out to a 4.5" tip.

With that background, I like the way it sounds at lower rpm's, but as you get around ~2700 and up, it's really "poppy." I'm wondering if anyone has ever used a "resonator" to reduce this and has it actually worked? That would be the easiest for me to add one, but I don't want to go through the trouble/money of doing that if it really won't gain me anything. And I'm just wondering if I should get rid of the "race" 40 series muffler and go with a different muffler all together? And if so, what would you guys suggest? I know @Larry has a magnaflow on his 8.1 swapped burban and seems to be ok with it, and IIRC @72gmck5 put an aftermarket muffler on his 8.1 truck (can't remember off hand what he went with again), so open to suggestions. I like the low grunt sound in an exhaust, and really just want to get rid of the poppy sound at higher rpms.

Aaannnnddddd go :D

add a magnaflow resonator or add a magnaflow muffler.

My truck will stop pop on decel but some of that is in the tune.....(3" In/Out 22"x9" magnaflow).

Personally I don't care for flowmasters

I used a Jones Turbine 4" with resonator, I think it was 22" overall and then out through a magnaflow 4" tailpipe. I like the sound it makes and seems pretty smooth and cuts down on the raspiness quite a bit. Mine too will pop on decal but I really like the sound and it sounds mean.

I'll look into both of those...you ever done a resonator before? Did it really quite the pop down at all? Some say it does, but I'm skeptical.

Thanks! I'll look into that one as well.

not on this truck but I have on other cars and yes they make a noticeable difference.

I wonder of the popping is un-burned fuel igniting in the exhaust system? A CAT would burn off any un-burned fuel.

Not sure about the 8.1, but I know ls motors have DFCO (deceleration fuel cut off) in the tune that makes them pop on decel. Depending on the year of the pcm, it could easily be disabled in the tune.

When I did the exhaust on my 300zx had a similar issue were it would rasp and pop from about 2k up to 6k, so I put a resonator on it and while its still got noise there's way less rattle. That experience led me to look for a better muffler solution than just a flow master or magnaflow. I heard that the firing order on the 8.1s make them more raspy and tend to pop especially when opening up the piping. So in my searching I saw the Jones had the resonator as part of the muffler and an overall straight through design. For the price its hard to beat and is as easy as replacing the muffler vs muffler and adding a resonator too.

The problem with resonators is they really need to be designed for the system to work correctly.
Another vote for magnaflow though. Always sound great.

Yep, same with FiTech and that's why I have a pop on decel. We can add in a % under the fuel cut menu though....

Quality bolt on catback exhaust systems will have a resonator on most car and truck applications.

I would like to go magnaflow...trying to find a 3.5" inlet/outlet with on offset inlet and centered outlet seems somewhat expensive (that's what my current flowmaster is; would like to find the same to make the change easier)...I'll keep looking

Nah, I got rid of the Fagnaflow long time ago on my Suburban and replaced it with a Spintech, which I don’t like either. Probably going to just follow the recipe of my K10 and do a H pipe with two cheap Thrush mufflers and call it good.

Fagnaflow. I put this on when it still had the little TBI 350 and sounded alright but it was way too small for an 8.1. Sounded terrible behind a BB

Spintech with an X-pipe. Not fond of this either

Wow, 3.5" pipe with a 4.5" outlet? That is huge! What do you think you're running, a Duramax? :haha:

Haha, yeah it's pretty big (that's what she said...) but when I purchased it a year and a half ago, they had a good deal on the tubing on summit, so I bought it all and did the whole exhaust myself. It flows like a mother trucker that's for sure, hahaha.

Did you still have some "popping" even with the magnaflow?

Hell, the Magnaflow was a total machine gun. It was terrible. The Spintech isn't poppy but the interior drone it horrible. I have yet to ever use a 2 in/ 2 out muffler on anything that didn't drone. That said, the K10 with true duals, H-pipe and Elcheapo Thrush mufflers doesn't drone at all but is poppy when cold but once it warms up it sounds really nice. I want that same sound on my Burb sooner or later
