Just acquired a set of old school long tube hooker headers (which barely barely fit) for my 7.4l vortec. Couple of questions....
1. What does everyone recommend for finishing out the system? Going with dual exhaust as i have been having issues with front driveline and stock crossover piece trying to occupy the same space at the same time. Looking for moderate noise, prefer performance over sound.

2. Oxygen sensors. Obviously i need to add them in. I know i can buy weld in bungs. But i would have to install them near the very end of the header. This would be a lot further downstream then the stock location in manifolds. Will this be an issue? Harness and pcm have been reworked by @Team208Motorsports so perhaps they (Josh?) can chime in on this??..... or anyone else with real world experience on this subject.....

Thanx in advance for the help everyone!!

Since you’re going Doubler, you’ll probably want shorter headers and a cross over to the driver side to run a single

See @mrk5 and @skunked in their build threads

Not gonna get shorter headers and certainly no crossover. Going with true dual exhaust. Eliminating the crossover is my main objective. Yeah, think i will shy away from pvc well. :saweet:

Most long tubes hang down too far IMO. Getting around the t-case can be interesting if you're clocked up.

My pass side goes over the tcase

Tight. Like not all the letters in tight tight

After working on mine with a clocked up doubler, AND seeing what others have dealt with as far as too much heat in the fuel, I can say that you will have some work to make it clear the shackles, as well as not cook the fuel in the lines, or the oil in the T-case.
Not that I don't wish you great success, but you are heading up a large hill!
The ethanol content in today's fuel makes it more susceptible to boiling from what I can tell. So keep the heat away from the fuel lines!
Just my 2 pesos....

Why is dual exhaust a must? Is it just a sound thing?

The O2 sensor should be at least 8 inches after the beginning of the collector. So all 4 cylinders on that side are read. Long tube, short tube, does not matter.

I'd ask Josh on the O2 sensor deal. On the earlier (OBD1) stuff GM had a time offset that is adjustable through programming, so basically the ECM has an idea how long after the firing event the O2 sensor should be seeing that exhaust.

Again OBD1, but I ran mine past the end of long tube headers (and unheated at that) and only at idle was the O2 getting cold enough to not read. It ran fine for years in that configuration, and I'm sure stock configuration was in the manifold as well. The O2 (heated now, simply so I could put it into closed loop faster) is presently in "medium length" headers, right at the collector. Also runs and reads fine. But again, these are OBD1 anecdotes, the later stuff should have even more refinement. Usually a good thing.

I had a 4X4 square body that had long tube headers and dual exhaust that a previous owner had put on, and everything you mentioned was a problem with that truck.

I am in the process of removing my dual exhaust to build a single system

Have you taken your truck over to Joe's shop yet? I still have not gotten around to taking my truck over there for my new exhaust system. Every time I think I have the free time something comes up.

No, I’m in the same boat. Had an appointment for Friday but had to cancel because got called to work.

So would it be safe to assume that those will duals have tried some sort of heat shielding with no resolve?

I was planning on going duals for performance but I think I’d be willing so sacrifice a little power to avoid the heat problems.

I had planned to use heat shield hose covers and even thought of making some sort of aluminum heatshield to to cover the inside frame rail.

Now that I write it, it all sounds like more work than it might be worth.

I am also planning on installing an anti-wrap bar, another reason the pass. side exhaust has to go bye-bye.

It really comes down to the t-case location and how much you are clocked.

And if your truck was originally 2wd or 4wd

Mine has duals, and the pipe going over the case is wrapped. And made a heat shield past the tcase where the pipe comes back toward the center. I did not have an issue prior to doing all that
