exhaust suggestions?

One thing he suggested was to use a Magnaflo style muffler to keep a decent tone, but would help with that highway drone. He said NOT to use the actual Magnaflo brand though Nd showed me a common problem with them. The cases split open. Said there is a knock - off style that sounds and looks a lot like the name brand, but they use a better quality material and construction.

whats this knock-off brand?

I went from a super 44 flowmaster to a 70 series on my C20. My K5 has a 70 series and a stock 350 tbi. It is fairly quiet. The 70 on my 79 C20 pickup is easily twice as loud at all engine speeds. The engine in the C20 is a gen I sbc 406 10.2:1 with a comp 264 roller cam. It still runs like a raped ape and it towed my 8k pound trailer just like it did with the super 44. There is very little drone now. It is most noticeable at an idle. I also have 1 5/8" tri y headers 3" pipe and a cat, single exhaust.

I am not sure how a 70 series would sound on a 6.0. I HATE the 50 series, both when I had it on my truck and when my brother put my old one on his 5.3 2005 chevy pickup. It sounds like a sport truck or something, but not like American muscle. The 44 was awesome but my ears can't take that anymore. The 70 on the K5 is subtle, and on the pickup it sounds like a tamed muscle car.

I bought these for $50 off a kid parting out a Mustang. I am not sure what "series" of muffler they are, but I have them on my 1988 V10 Suburban. The exhaust consists of a set of cheap headers, 2.5' exhaust to the these mufflers, and then 2.5' tail pipes over the axle, and out the side behind the rear tires.

It is louder than I would like, but not bad at low engine speeds. If I get on it though, it really makes some noise. I think it sounds good, but I am not 16 anymore, and it seems unnecessary.

I feed my 350 TBI motor with 3 single mandrel bent exhaust with aftermarket cat and muffler guy at shop recomm. Exhaust is nice muffler is little loud now for me and wife hates it. So when I get time going to go back and quite the K5 down bit.

I've got a different motor, but am gonna go dual 3" magnaflows. I thought about doing the 44 deltas or the 50 series, but everyone tends to do flowmasters and, well, I don't want mine to sound like everyone elses. Plus I hate drone at cruising speed.

My biggest worry is drone at cruising speed. I want a little growl if I get into the throttle but I'll live without it if I can at least be quiet at cruise.

I used to run Flowmaster 40's and I tried Spintech but I really like the Magnaflow muffler I've been running the past few years. I like the deep throaty sound.

My work truck is an '08 Chevy with the 6.0L. Whatever the factory exhaust is it sounds really good. Can't hear it much in the cab but when someone else drives it I'm always surprised how good it sounds from outside the truck.

Although I should qualify my response, I've found I'm liking quieter exhaust as I get older.

Wow :(

I like my 2.5" IN/OUT 50 series on my 4.3 S10. Sounds decent, super quiet while cruising, decent note for WOTt. My Blazer's 406 runs 2.5" Y pipe to 3" single with 50 series as well. I always thought is sounded good when I get on it, but I also have no doors/carpet so I wouldn't know what noise is what while cruising. :doah:

I started with the 50 series on the S10 cause I've heard many MANY 4.3s with other brands and hated the hollow V6 sound, I thought the 50 sounded best on it.:dunno:

I am, however, looking to try something different on my 5.3 '68 C10. Dual 2.25 or 2.5 with Borla, Dynomax, or Magnaflow.

I'd you don't like the drone at highway speeds, stay away from the 40's series mufflers. As previously mentioned, that's what we're fighting with our 5.3.

Whatever you decide, remember when you put a cat inline it will drop the decibels by about 20 percent. There wasn't a big Change in power but mine was a lot quieter with a cat. P. O. Didn't have one on so I had t put one to pass smog when I bought my 94 with 5.7. I really like the sound of my Napa high flow muffler and a cat. It's fairly quiet unless you get on it and idle is just slightly higher than stock. Look into it. I believe it was only a hundred bucks. Universal cat for 2 1/4 in/out was 69 bucks there as well. My y pipe was still good and stock manifolds still. With headers I bet it would sound even better. Just Havn't gone that far yet.

Thanks for all the input guys. At the moment I'm leaning towards 2-1/2" y pipes to 3" through a cat, muffler then out the drivers side just behind the tire. I'm still undecided on which muffler though.

Those of you with y pipes, got any pics? I've always had dual exhaust so I don't even know where the best place to cross over is going to be. Do I need to make sure I can unbolt it from the single section? I don't want to be in a situation where I have to cut it in order to get the tranny out.

A stock y pipe I've only seen go from drivers side to passenger side collector. Then out the back. Mine sits under the engine pan between the engine and transmission where they bolt together and make a perfect space between the two to run it. Now that hat I rhink about it mine is 2.5 from the collector back and I believe 3 inch out after the muffler.

One thing he suggested was to use a Magnaflo style muffler to keep a decent tone, but would help with that highway drone. He said NOT to use the actual Magnaflo brand though Nd showed me a common problem with them. The cases split open. I checked out midas yesterday to get a quote on what I want. I decided on 2.5" y-pipe to 3" out the drivers side with a cat and muffler. The first quote I got was $650+ :eek1:

He wanted $200+ just for the cat, so I told him I'd be bringing in my own. I just ordered one from summit 3" in/out for about $70.

He also mentioned the magnaflo knockoff and said that would save me quite a bit of money too. That would get the cost from him under $400 but that still seems way too high. For that kind of money I'm considering buying my own pipe and welding it up myself but I really don't know where to start with that.

That's part of the reason I do my own. Plus I've not been impressed with a lot of the work I've seen come out of the exhaust shops around here. I've only done my own complete exhaust with headers.

I visualized in my head how many bends and to what angle I thought the bends might be. Then added those numbers up to figure out how many pieces of mandrel bent exhaust I needed. I used mostly J and U bends from Summit. Plus measured out a rough idea of the distance I would need to cover and ordered some straight pieces.

I cut and welded the mandrel bends as I went. I call it a "Frankenstein" exhaust, but it works. It was really just a lot of eyeballing and estimating. Not necessarily the prettiest to look at.

To me the trickiest part seemed to be making the hangers work in convenient locations.
