Got the K5 loaded up last night and off to the exhaust shop today.

When I originally purchased the K5 it had a normal ram horn on the driver's side and a log style later model manifold on the passenger side with some nasty old exhaust and glass packs.

I purchased a pair of 2.5" ram horns a while ago and finally got the painted and mounted Monday night. Going with 2.5" exhaust to a pair of Flowmaster Super 40's - I won one of them a few years ago from this site. (Did get a call a little while ago from the exhaust shop stating the center out, offset out won't work very well so going with proper ones)

Interested to see how it sounds, minus the old exhaust leaks and glass packs :haha:
 
Got the K5 home last night and I'm pretty happy with the sound. I'm surprised by how different it sounds than the Dynomax Ultraflo's that I have on the K20's bbc. The Ultraflo's were supposed to be pretty aggressive but they are pretty tame compared to the Super 40's. Drove the K5 in the city but not the highway but felt the exhaust was not at all too loud, which I did want to avoid.

Thanks to each of you - it is wild having them both, knock on wood, running at the same time. That has only happened once before and it wasn't for very long before the K20 went down due to the transfer case dying.
 
New exhaust sounds pretty mean. Also, I agree - the flatbed is one of my favorites. It's pretty cool that you've got them both running.
 
Thought I'd throw up a few pics of the exhaust. The ram horns are 2 1/2" repo corvette manifolds that I cleaned up a bit and then sprayed with high temp exhaust manifold paint. Will be interesting to see if the paint lasts. I used the recommended primer also but I usually have poor luck with paint lasting, so we will just have to see how it does.

Ignore the zip ties, haven't had time to work the plug wires to keep them off the manifolds.

The exhaust is 2 1/2" and lead to the Flowmasters.

The left muffler looks close to the driveshaft but that is more the angle of the pic than an actual problem.

Worked out well that I went to take these pics as I found the left rear shock was just about to work its way off the shock mount and the other side was loose too. Guess I need to be checking some nuts. I'm a little surprised the exhaust guy didn't notice and let me know of those two problems.

I didn't even think about getting my factory gas tank skid plate reinstalled before the exhaust went on, hopefully there is no interference!

Looks great. But seems like you need a bit of a heat shield for your oil filter or get one of those heat blanket things that wrap arount your exhaust pipe. BTW, I clicked on your webpage last night and that is real nice. Your tech and pics are sweet. Look to be a bit of a an outlaw born 150 years too late.

Did you ever drop the K20 down to 2" body lift and if so what is the total lift and current tire size? Where did you get the flat bed too.
 
I'm a little surprised the exhaust guy didn't notice and let me know of those two problems.

He doesn't happen to do shock repair too does he? Maybe he was hoping for a return trip? :)
 
I will take a look at the oil filter, I think the pic is a bit deceiving, but better to be safe than sorry so I'll look at that.

Thanks for the compliments on my website - I've really enjoyed putting it together over the years. I have absolutely no idea what I'm doing when I work in html, I just have a template I fumble through and make work :D

I had grand plans of dropping the body lift on the K20 down a couple inches when I was replacing the transfer case but every option that I could do to accomplish that had problems. I ended up having the K20 off the road for so long I just gave up and left the body lift as is.

The total lift is right about 9-10" at this time - I'd really prefer it be in the 7" range but oh well, maybe later. I currently run 35x12.50x16 Super Swampers on 16 x 8" rims. Lets just say I have plenty of clearance :haha: I'll be the first to admit this is just a truck I enjoy on the street, there is no where close by to offroad and my free time is awfully limited anyway, but I sure enjoy the truck and I guess that is all that is important.

I bought the flatbed from a company called Bradtech out of Derby, Kansas. They are no longer in business. I remember the fabricator was very happy that I wanted a couple custom items as he said he got pretty board when he made the same bed over and over.

Although my pickup bed is in great shape, I really enjoy the functionality of the flatbed. I've got the pickup bed stored in my shop so I can change it back if I ever should choose to - course it would need a paint color change and a new wood bed.
 
I run spark plug wires for a 1975 vette, they are longer and you can run them under the exaust instead of over. The vette had ramhorns and hei so its almost like they were made to fit:D

I love the sound of flowmasters! Nothing beats the rumble of them and crusing topless
