Hello,
I'm hoping for some educated advice and opinions about a trade I might make for a 1987 K5.
I have a 1994 300ZX Twin Turbo that is pretty damn sweet! I've put well over $35k into the car. The motor has been completely rebuilt from the bottom up, all forged internals... yadda, yadda, yadda all kinds of stuff on this car. Adult owned and professionally built and maintained.

The K5, I've only seen pictures at this time, has a "newly rebuilt engine & tranny." New paint. Interior is great (owned by a person who has an auto interior business, said its perfect inside) a lift, the entire top comes off... which I'm confused over because I thought 87' had the hard top over the cab?

Anyway, I've always loved K5's and some are just beautiful!! I'm wondering who thinks its a fair trade? literally I've done a ton to my car and nothing is cheap on these. They rolled off in 94' at $42k, for what thats worth??

I'd appreciate any feedback you can share. I'll be driving it from CA to NJ and this would become my camping/hunting/end o world vehicle, lol.
Thank you!!

What do you think your car is worth? Pictures of the Blazer?

That Blazer is probably worth $2-4K, I would guess you value your car much higher than that.

If I were selling my car the price would be around $14k but... Kelly blue book puts it a bit above $8k. 130,000 chassis miles.I have replaced the suspension and sway bars etc. Its just so many new parts and I didn't buy any knock-off type parts or unproven performance parts.
Bad is these cars are expensive to maintain properly. No cats so smog every two years is getting more & more difficult. I understand I'll never get back what I put in but I just don't want to give it away.
Thanks for the info!

Your 300 sounds pretty sweet. But we think a lot of our K5s around here too.

I know where you're at, I have an Acura TL Type S that is my DD (sorta akin to your 300) and I love it. It's fast, tuned and smooth to drive.

On the other hand, my K5 is loud, bouncy and gets bad mileage, but I love it with all my heart. Had it for 12 years now and turned every bolt on it at least once.

In my heart they are the same, but financially I know they are far apart. My advice would be to have the guy add some boot OR sell your car and buy the Blaze OR get a cheaper blaze and keep em both.

I say this without having seen either of the vehicles you speak of, but there are plenty of quality K5s out there for far less. For ~$14K I would expect frame off resto with a bunch of aftermarket goodies, but that's me.

What he said. That truck better be 100% pristine restomod for $14k. Even at $8k it better be awesome.

The good, its an 87 so factory fuel injection. A plus if you plan to wheel it at all.

Is the blazer lifted or anything?

He could have easily done a full vert conversion, I plan on doing one to my 89 next year sometime. 73-75 was a full vert so you can swap the windshield frame over to a newer one, cut the doors and put on the proper parts and bam you have a full vert. If it is a full vert check for some type of body strengthening under the rockers, cutting the roof off weakens the structure greatly, the 73-75 had rocker boxes to help with this, after 76 and newer did not. If not that is something you will have to do right away.

I am sure you know this but ask for receipts for all the work done.

Sounds like your car is pretty bitchen I don't think I would do a straight trade for it at all. Might ask for a couple grand or more

Really need to see pics of said blazer and for that matter your car to really judge. I think you have to have 5 posts to post pics

Excellent feedback everyone! I just posted my Z on Craigslist quickly, maybe it'll sell and I can buy a nice K5. The "seller" of the truck is pretty adamant that I'll love it...
Appreciating the help!

I see half ton axles, no specs in the ad, a major body modification that can get sketchy REAL fast, a lift and tires of unstated size, horrible grammar, GMC badges along with lame 4x4 badges, and all kinds of fail.

I wouldn't even look at it.

The chances of that thing having a crate small block, a well built OD trans, 4.56 or lower gearing in the axles and a locker in the rear, a well setup suspension and not some generic Rough Country lift, proper body bracing to account for the full convertible conversion, and it being 100% great shape are LOW.
My money's on it being full of hackery.

Wow! I came to the right place... The guy is in Goleta, basically by UC Santa Barbara. Thats to far after reading AJMBLAZER's insights. I'm truly blown away by the assistance!!

Thats kind of what I thought when I went to look at my Jimmy. It wasn't bad at all. Its worth a look, just cause someone can't spell doesn't mean they can't work on cars, or know what works on different cars.

I wouldn't expect too much thats for sure. No way I would trade the car straight across for it.

I don't know about Cali but around here that would sell for no less than 5-6k and it would take forever to sell and more than likely sell to out of state.

See if you can get some more detailed pics of it

keep looking and don't be in a hurry

Is the Z your DD or only car? I wouldn't trade any reliable DD for a blazer. They are old and many hands have touched them.

Don't hesitate to post up some other blazers. However, this group of guys are very picky about what we are paying for. Prices higher than 8k better either be factory beautiful or highly modified in a way we like. Los Angeles area will give you rust free trucks, be everyone and their grandmother think their sh1t is custom, one of a kinda, and worth $$$$$

Yeah but you've had a LOT of trouble and work if I remember correctly. That truck in NO WAY says $14k to me, even $8k. Even in the rust belt he'd be hard pressed to get $8k for it any more.

I've got a guy coming to by a drum set tomorrow for $2500. I think I'll just look to buy project K5.
Everyone has been Great, thank you all so much!!
