A minor correction of terms. It's not velocity stacked, like pancakes or women's breasts, but velocity stack, like a smoke stack. Typical set-up is designed to allow clean, non turbulent air into a carb or fi inlet. By adusting length, they can be tuned to specific engine rpm use.

Dont mean to go off topic but I just bought the TTC 2003 on saturday and I have seen it atleast 6 times already. There are some freakin crazy wicked bad trucks in there!

Isn't it just a throttle body spacer designed to create more turbulence and therefore more atomization of fuel= more power? /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

Oh ok, I was thinking of something else. Yes, those are used to tune an engine so that at a certain RPM you will get an almost supercharger like effect. /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif
 
They wouldn't be any good for off roading because I don't think you can run a filter if you run stacks.
The incoming air hits the closed intake valve at a high velocity so the air "crams" into a small space and creates pressure. Then the pressure build forces the air back out again creating a vaccuum zone. The trick is to make your stack the exact length so that when the intake is opening again the air is rushing into the low pressure area creating the supercharger effect. There is a formula to determine the exact length but I have forgotten. I read it a long time ago in a Hot Rod article. /forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif

really popular in the 70's if memory serves me...

you can filter them to a certain extent.... thin foam filter that gets sandwiched between 2 screens at the top...

had one on my 340 Duster, seemed to work pretty well...

BUT if you have to run a POS filter and then end up wearing out your engine quicker than you have to then thats no good either. /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif

I have a Velocity stack on my TBI Blazer. I used it to get rid of the air choking POS spacer that goes between the air cleaner housing and the TB. Got more air flow. I have a lot better throttle responce.
I cut a bigger hole out the bottom of stock air cleaner housing to fit the diamater of the stack. And riveted it to the bottom of the housing. Works great.
Velocity stacks help to speed up the air flow at low RPMs
