I'm hoping someone has been down this road. On my 86 CUCV, the button on the door handle suddenly disengaged from the mechanism. I opened it up and could see the little latch bar dangling. I was able to shove it back into the hole it goes into and it works for now, but there is nothing really holding it. It appears to me there may have been a little clip or something originally, maybe now rusted away. But I have no idea what the part is, or, if I had it, how the heck I would install it way back in the door cavity. Anyone?

Take the door panel off and theres two little bolts on each side of the handle itself. Pull the handle up and out and you can access it. Probably just the little spring held in by a roll pin.

Yeah, I opened it up on the inside and there's a little L shaped rod that comes down about 4 inches from the handle and hooks into the latch mechanism. The end of the L has a groove in it. I looked at the other side door and the end of the L points toward the outer edge of the door, away from where you could see. Since the connection is so far below the handle, I don't think working through the handle hole would be very helpful.

The thing the L-rod goes through looks kind of like the clips that are used for screws to attach into sheet metal. I wonder if the rod is just supposed to lock into that thing without anything else.

I've used these things intended for throttle linkages on carbs on door latch rods before, since I had a bunch of them leftover from carb kits..
They cant fall off as easy!..

You can get an assortment of those throttle rod clips (and probably the factory door rod ones) off the "HELP" rack at most good parts stores..

The clip is in the help section at most part stores. The older ones on my 72 were held in by the metal of the handle itself. Once it wears out I had to buy new handles.
