EZO's Build Thread - Recipe for disaster... BUMPSTOPS, rough draft version 1.0

I am on the very south end of Parker, only a few miles from Franktown. My brother lives in Parker also.

Would enjoy meeting up sometime with other full sizers too!

I have been thinking we should have a get together for a wrench / beer / bbq day out at my dads shop sometime. :thumb:
The shop is in Elizabeth, pretty close to Wal-Mart, so it would be easy for guys near Parker and Castle Rock...

I live in Founders in Castle Rock (turn right at the light in Franktown, and just at the top of the hill). So we probably only live about 5-10 miles away from each other :pimp:.

I am down for a wrenchathon! I have been trying to figure everything out with my TBI motor swap, and I have been looking at wiring diagrams so much that I think I am starting to go cross-eyed. So a change of pase would be nice. Let me know

Just read through the build and awesome job i totally understand life side tracking a project. Also I live on the north side of Denver and would be down to meet up with you guys if you plan anything.

Brake lines are now done, bleeding brakes in the next week. :thumb: I am still working on the bumpstops.

I ordered new custom driveshafts from Bills Englewood Driveshaft, they should be done this week! :D

Here are some preliminary inner fender trim photos for the ford towers - Still a little finish trimming to do for them to be just right.

Doh! I'm busted. I need to get back to working on the old rig... I have been wrestling with getting the Atlas clocked to the right spot and need to modify the crossmember slightly. I need to take some pics and get them posted. I am planning on working on it in the next week or so.

Can we get an update on this thing? Been almost a year....you worked on this at all? You still have it? I really want that Atlas just in case you have thought about selling it :D

LOL, yeah I still have it, have not worked on it in quite some time. It has been hanging out at my dads house taking up his shop space... :doah:

The last time I worked on it I was attempting to get the front drive-shaft installed and the atlas clocking sorted out so I am not running some crazy angles. Frankly, it pissed me off trying to get my front u-joint not to bind up and I rolled it to the back of the shop.

I recently bought a new house with some acreage and hoping to build shop so I can work on it at my own place when I have time. :waytogo:

Between selling a house buying a new house, moving and the company I work at getting acquired I have had some craziness going on. I am planning on keeping the project going however! :thumb:

If I were you, I would not be as worried about getting the t-case 100% flat. In most cases it causes more harm than it does good (like what you are going through of having harsh front d-shaft angles). The pic of when you first put the Atlas in there looked alright to me. Then just build a skid plate to protect it. I have found a lot of guys go to extreme measures to get a flat belly, and then I see some guys who don't go flat at all and still don't really have a problem. Just some food for thought.

Also, where did you get your atlas from? Did you purchase straight from Advanced Adapters, or did you go through a dealer, or?? I am debating on regearing my axles, or just swapping from my 241SYE to an Atlas and leaving everything else alone (that would be the easier route, but more expensive).

awesome build!! keep up the awesome work, definitely gives motivation to get back to work on mine!

Well................ um, no updates. It is pretty much sitting as it was. lol
Here I am again shopping for a house, looking to move in the next couple months. I am really trying to find a place with a workshop so I can finish the project.
Long term I am truly just not sure I will keep the K5 however, I just don't know how feasible it is to have a fullsize offroader here. My brother and my dad both have rzr's and I bought a 5th wheel toy-hauler last year so a rzr is likely in my future.

Trust me, a full-size K5 in CO is more than feasible (as I grew up my whole life in CO and only moved out of the state just over a year ago). In fact, I think it's better as most of the trails in CO are more destination type trails where having the room in the truck for tools/parts and gear is very beneficial.

Now if you don't think the truck is going to be good for your own personal uses, well then that's a different story. I know the rzr's are fun and all, but to be honest, as far as the rzr "community" goes, I can't stand those guys. They are the new jeep "poser" crowd. Meaning the typical people who get into them for recreational use are the type of people that don't have any skill or desire to build anything and usually have deep pockets. But that's just my personal opinion on the matter.

Hope it doesn't get sold and you at least finish it to enjoy it for a short bit...with how much work was put into it over the years, just to sell it off would be a shame IMO

For a true all around vehicle (meaning something that will be used in all types of conditions...mud, rocks, snow, dirt, etc.) a true 4-speed case is worth every penny in my mind. You will find you will use all the gears in the t-case all the time. For one dimensionally built rigs (meaning a dedicated rock rig, or dedicated mud rig, etc.) a single case with a single gear ratio to get your desired overall crawl ratio where you want it is totally fine, but for rigs that see lots of different terrain, 4 speed all the way IMO.

But don't just settle for Atlas. Atlas makes awesome stuff, no doubt, but there are other great companies who make 4-speed cases that are just as good, such as ORD's magnum or NWF's Eco/Black/Titan boxes. Or shoot, if you want to get a doubler even cheaper, then try and find a 203/205 someone's trying to sell off (the only thing that kinda sucks about the classic 203/205 doubler is it's really only a 3 speed case, since the 203 and 205 have virtually the same gear ratios, that means you can really only choose from 1:1, 2:1, and 4:1...that's where going with a reduction style box such as the Magnum or NWF's boxes give you more gear options and make it a true 4-speed...similar to the atlas 4 speed...but no doubt the classic 203/205 is still a great option for lots of rigs). Just something to think about
