Factory Tach sold for $415.00

I'm not sure yet. Havn't looked. It's sitting on my desk at home. I know I saw some places on the web that do it.
There used to be a place I knew of in town, but I know they closed up shop a couple of years ago.
Look in the phone book under speedometer service, those places usally do all types of guages.

Dyeager....didn't see any in the calgary pick apart io visited a few weeks back. Still looking for the golden goose....90-1 RPO 8A8...electronic speedo with tach....although mr 73 needs to email some pics of what he created as i have a pile of parts to do what he did with the C60 tach and air psi gauage....

Yeah, old post, I'm bringing it back because I think I've stumbled on something.

Unless GM made an entirely different instrument cluster housing (they didn't for '73-89 AFAIK) you CAN'T get a tach in a '90-91. Just took mine apart, guess what? There is not spot for the small fuel gauge. You can't put ANYTHING in that position except 3 bulbs, but I have no idea what they are for, not used on mine. (although the filter has a battery symbol)

There is no provision in that area for the metal contacts that pop into the board, there is no upper left screw post, and the casting of the plastic is actually ribbed in that area all the way to the black piece, so the light from each bulb is separate.

I was going to retrofit the earlier tach/fuel gauge into my '90 cluster, but that isn't going to happen now. It could be done, but more effort than it's worth it looks like.

Thought I would add this to a post that somewhat covers this issue. Going to go out on a limb and say that there are no '90-91 R/V tach clusters.

Oh you can *do* anything. :)

It would really just entail cutting a bigger hole in the back of the cluster where the speedo goes, and like you say, hardwire the speedometer to the PCB.

I'm not certain the PCB will swap from '90-91 to earlier, but it probably would. (most housing dimensions stayed the same of course) The wiring is entirely different though, so you'd HAVE to re-use the '90-91 PCB, or re-wire the IP connnector. Already done that once, don't intend to again. :)

The rest of my wiring is totally custom anyways, so whats another re-pinning? lol

Could you possibly post a couple pics of the newer electric speedo, so I have an idea of what I'd have to do to make it work?

I hate posts where the pics go dead, but hopefully this won't for a long long time. :)

So on the first one, you can see how different the casting of the housing is. Interesting though, looking at that, there IS a small rectangle above the fuel gauge contacts, about the size of the tach connector. It is definitely much too high for the older style tach though. I think you'd end up cutting the PCB copper in that area to fit the tach, which would probably require more (re)wiring.

Second photo notice that there is no provision for the small fuel gauge at all.

Third photo is the same cluster but front side...no fuel gauge is going there without some serious cutting, and extra wiring.

Fourth photo shows an earlier housing, the clock/small fuel gauge location. Just a bit different. :)

Hey I used eBay pics and shouldn't you be sleeping?

wow, didn't realize tach's are so hard to find! i have almost 30 c/k 10-30's, about 1/3 of them have factory tach's. i have 1 that has the regular gauges...speedo/gas gauge, but it has a small tach where the small gauges are....there is oil pressure, water temp, clock, and the small tach...looks stock.... did gm make a tach for this location?

i've never seen a tach with the gas gauge in the mjddle of the sweep, like the one shown, or that air gauge. say they are in the large trucks like the big frozen pizza trucks and such? must start looking! i like it!

speedo/gas/tach & oil press., water temp, clock and air psi...and all neat and tidy in a stock bezel from factory parts....sounds sweet, must start hunting parts!

any more info on the subject, keep us posted.

I just picked up the factory tach for the blazer (it came out of a 3/4 ton pick up), from pick and pull for 15 bucks, and it looks 10 times better than that POS they were selling on Egay

sorry to revive this dead puppy.... anyone wire theirs and write down where each pin went? 1-18??? to which 4 are no connects on mine....

I wish they were selling for that much now, I just picked up another one out of an 81-83 for $20. I have 3 so far, 2 have the fuel gauge in with the tach, then the regular one with the small fuel gauge off to the left.

The other two, one is from an early 70s, looks to be NOS it's so nice, the other I think was a diesel, tach only goes to 4k.

To the OP, what year is your truck and what year did the tach come from?? 78-up is usually a plug and play.

well i have a 78.... not sure what year it came out of... and it dont seem to be even close to plug and play...

OE tachs are not wired via the big cluster plug, they have a stand alone 3 wire harness.

eyyyup... i know that part..

hot, ground and tach (which will go to my msd 6al box)

was curious if anyone know the pinouts on these clusters.. so i didnt have to figure out which wires were what... in my 78 i have yellow.. there is no yellow on this one... also all my ground were tied together.. on this one... they are individual... although i bought the unit from ebay and my gauges have longer wires then all tie together for ground.. the guy cut these short so most likely i will be able to tie them together..

i was hoping to find it documented but no go..

usually i throw stuff together and never document.. when im done.. im going to go back and do an A to Z on ez-wiring 21 for the next guy that wants to buy it... and even if he buys the all black kit he wont be lost... :dunno:

So since we are on the topic of factory tachs.... I picked up a tach cluster out of a 73 or 74 pick up at the junkyard a few months ago. 1st one I have ever seen in person. What is required to swap it into my 86 CUCV M1009? Im a total newb when it comes to re-wiring and gauge modification

OK dig out your factory Tachs!
This one just sold on eBay for $415.00 :eek1:

This auction was for a instrument cluster from a 86 chevy truck. it had the factory tach in good working condition. He said it had light surface rust or dirt on the bottom of the speedo and tach. All the mounting tabs were good. He said that on the very bottom next to the gear select indicator there was a piece of the blue plastic broken off.

I just picked up one of these :)

I have a thread with a detailed pin out. They change from year to year, depending upon options as well.
