OK dig out your factory Tachs!
This one just sold on eBay for $415.00 :eek1:

This auction was for a instrument cluster from a 86 chevy truck. it had the factory tach in good working condition. He said it had light surface rust or dirt on the bottom of the speedo and tach. All the mounting tabs were good. He said that on the very bottom next to the gear select indicator there was a piece of the blue plastic broken off.

That's a bit high. They usally sell for $200 or so.

I bought a new Tach/Fuel (just gauge, they only came in Med. Duty trucks), NOS condition, for $150.

Here's the cluster I pieced together with it:
Air gauge was from another medium duty cluster I found in a yard.

The factory tachs are somewhat rare, in working order is rarer yet.

I thought just us first geners played the tach game. 67-72 tachs sell for about the same. To rich for my blood.

I had one given to me by a friend only to lose it in a fire.:doah:

I paid $85 for my full tach cluster and then another $45 to have the tach repaired and changed to a 7K. The small fuel gauge alone is like $75 from LMC and noone makes a factory tach anymore:( . I still have the 100MPH speedo and the other gauges that came with my tach cluster. I wanted to use the 100MPH speedo in my K5 but it does not have a VSS so it would not work.

I have a perfect working condition factory tach in my '78 K10.

It's even on my original build sheet.

Yup..original build sheet. lol

Somehow I managed to find a K10, in awesome condiiton, with 26k on it in PA.
Original '78 owners manual, build sheet, etc.

I am looking for a complete set for my 81 K5 blazer 4wd manual trans

HELP PLEASE!!!!!

Local yards are a good place to start. But you may find non-working order ones. Whenever I'm in a yard, I'll take an extra cruise around for these tach clusters, working or not working, you might get lucky, and they usally give 'em away for $20 or so.
eBay is another option, buy be prepared to spend.

81-ups are harder to find in that font color and setup for gauges.

I had one out of a 76 blazer that worked when I bought it. I sanded all the rust off it painted it black and used a fine brush to make it look closer to the #'s in my '90. I did the same to the gas gauge from the 76 as well. Then I hobbled together a cluster installed it and it promptly fried 4 days later. The needle still moves but wont work. Someone on here suggested there was supposed to be a resister inline with the wire that runs to my coil. Then everyone I find who says they will fix it NEVER gets back to me. It's so f'in frustrating and the piece of black cardbard I have in my cluster leaves me feeling lonely and wondering what I'm spinnin. :doah:
I suppose I could print out a hot chick on there. :D

I've got a tach cluster with a volt gauge, temp gauge, mechanical oil pressure gauge, 100 mph speedo, and factory blue ringed tach in my truck. Oh, also has a VSS, a check gauges idiot light, service engines soon light, combined seatbelt and brake light, and a 4x4 light.

All works beautifully, and looks totally stock :D

Snap me a picture of the back of your 100 mph speedo, and I'll let you know if it can be retrofitted with a VSS like I did to mine :D

So who did the repair job and what needed fixed? I need to get a needle replace on one.

I will get a pic of the back of my speedo I dont need a 100MPH speedo but why not:D.

I got ahold of Necromancer on the 67-72 chevy trucks board. He has a signal generator and the schematics. He calibrated it and replaced a resistor on the board. Apparently the type of resistor GM used leaks electrolyte as it ages and changes the resisitance. He can also recalibrate to a different range of tach mine started as 5K and is now a 7K:D.

Sandawg, Don't worry about resistors, they're carbon. Capacitors are what leak. DSM's are known for ****ty caps frying ECU's 1st and 2nd gen.

Me mechanic electricity hurt that all I know:doah:. I wanted to type capacitor but my hands would not let me:o. He tests some **** and changes some **** and then it works:D.
