Well i failed inspection for a few things. new jersey is crazy i have new dual exhaust with new dual cats. (89) i failed cause glass packs are illegal here:doah:. even though with the cats it isnt loud. thats just a rant tho my questions are related to shocks and brakes. i failed for worn shocks was running trailmaster ssv but they are like 60 dollars a shock and moneys a bit tight what are you guys running? and were they a decent price? and work well? (6in lift all spring). and my other question is i failed the automated brake test for too much stopping power in the rear of the vehicle. i have steel braided brake lines, but do i need to put in an aftermarket prop valve to adjust brake bias? shouldnt the factory one do that? do they go bad? any help would be appreciated thanks o yea also failed for no front mud flaps? shouldnt the body of the truck act as a "mudflap" for the front axle...soo many rules.

wait til next year...20 years old is historic in most states and you don't need an inspection

That really irks me. I know you are trying to do the right thing, so I commend you on that. But for those guys to bust you for glasspacks, when dual cats are federally illegal, seems mighty stupid to me. Maybe it's a matter of authority to enforce federal law, but why are they going to get you for some things, and not others?

It would be nice if there was one standard for everyone, although I'm not sure I like standards like you guys have. :)

You shouldn't need to mess with proportioning, but how are they testing that? I don't understand that at all. Unless they measure weight transfer while rolling and braking, I'm not sure how they could possibly accurately test brake bias. Not to mention, how do they test shocks??

yeah, washington is nice to own a rig in, no inspections, just pay for your tags:deal: and youre good to go. but, if you want to go where there is NO regulation, go to South Africa, 95 octane fuel and no cats, not even newer vehicles. heck they just barely outlawed leaded gas!

Yea New Jersey is 25 years for historic, and you have to be at least 25 years old to drive a historic vehicle. I do state isnpections in pa, i know its illegal to over catalast a vehicle. but new jersey doesnt check that, It is actually very hard to figure out what is necessary for a lifted truck inspection here laws you can find are vague and outdated while others arent anywhere to be found. brakes are tested by stopping with all 4 wheels on different on different sensor pads. not sure much about it they give you a print out that shows bias side to side and front to rear, all computer calculated... do i pay $125 for a sticker or do it rite?

Do whichever costs less for now......

That will give you one year to go through at your own pace and deal with the other issues that you know are going to come up again at next year's inspection.

A brake proportioning valve should be an easy one, new shocks are easy (once you can afford them). Exhaust will depend on how exotic your solution ends up being.

I hate being "rushed" to do repairs to pass an inspection. You end up paying too much and getting work done at shops you might not even trust for the sake of a quick fix.

I know how you feel. Im on the hunt for an inspection sticker, and i know damn well that im not passing NJ inspection, Im sure the emissions will pass, but the lift and one tons wont. I geuss ill be buying one.

Both F150 I've had came from factory with dual cats, so did the last dodge I owned. Maybe modifying from single to dual is illegal? Though I thought you could change from single exhaust to true dual if you ran two cats. Just my thinking, never knew for sure. I just hate cat-back systems. They all sound the same.

NJ inspection is so archaic they actually put you on a rolling brake test. I would fail cuz my shift indicator didn't work it was a joke so glad I moved.

you dont know the best part in 2000 the state revamped the whole thing to a 2year test and spent millons to redo it -- it still stinks -- i fixed it i moved to pa --- anyone want to by a house in nj :doah:

i went to a local sunoco and 11 bucks later i rolled out passing. funny thing is when i 1st went to the state inspection place , the guy asked me if i should go to the tilt test facility , and i said " they told me to come here" (of course they didnt)

after 3 guys with rulers measured my k5, they inspected me. i failed for emissions, thats why i went to sunoco.

My dad's CVPI came factory with true duals as well.. IIRC the thing has like 4 cats. My Ranger has two :eek1:

not saying its right but if you need it. i know someone who could pass you.

I'm gonna try the shell station, I know my emissions will pass. I think all the lights work. Its worth a try

i have to do the same, i have to go to the ghetto too...newark! if anyone wants some crack let me know hahahah, just kidding..

will let you know. been a while since i have been there. its in east Hanover nj.

my 01 GMC Sierra Z71 has factory dual cats but it ran into a y-pipe so i cut the y-pipe and ran true duals :D

and i love living in KY cause no inspections and no emission tests = no cats; running true duals with glasspacks and full length headers on the 86 GMC K1500 :D
