Sorry guys I posted this in another area that did not really apply, but here goes:

I need some suggestions regarding a 1996 suburban 4wd.

Here is what I am having trouble with:

Driving at speed, 55 or higher, when I let off the gas, the tach shows rpm still at 1600 to 1900 rpm with foot off the gas pedal.

Obviously this makes stopping real work. So, I knock the transmission into neutral, coast to a stop, and once the speed drops to zero, the rpm drops to idle.

I have checked all vacuum lines, changed the mass airflow sensor, sprayed the whole intake with brake cleaner to check for leaks, no help.

Am I missing anything? This thing is too dangerous for my kids to drive right now and is seriously going to wear out my brakes.

Mileage on the car is 196K. It is a vortec. Runs like a top. No missing, no check engine lights, analyzer shows an occasional O2 sensor but that's it.

Suggestions?

Thanks in advance folks!

Wow, there's one I've never heard of. I'm interested to hear what it is when you get it figured out.

Im guessing you have cruise control? Is it by any chance active when you are having this problem? It could possibly be that unit malfunctioning? Im just racking my brain for unlikely weird shet that could cause this because as previously said it is a strange problem. Hopefully 4x4high tunes in here. Hes always good at figuring out weird shet like this.

Yeah I thought of that too. Made sure the cruise control was OFF, hit the brakes, checked the throttle linkage, no help.

The only thing I can figure is the computer. Going to replace that when I get home. Right now I am in Krgystan flying troops and won't be home until the end of the month.

I have a friend that repairs cars and he is stumped on this too. He has offered to buy me a computer and have it programmed for his cost to help me out.
