I'm thinking about buying a Fein MM. I've wanted one for some time now, but I actually have the money to buy it now. I'm trying to decide if its worth it.

Here is what I want to do. Refinish my kitchen cabinets- they are a raised panel design. Sand and paint the crown moulding in several rooms. Trim door jambs when I replace the carpet with hard wood. Grout repair- this house has lots of tile.

Seems like this would be the best bet:

But at $400 it's not a decision to be taken lightly.

My dad has one and absolutely swears by it. Keep in mind that my dad is very skilled with all types of power and hand tools that relates to remodeling, woodworking, etc. He buys and uses tools for remodeling, etc like Kert at DIY would do for fab and metal working. He buys the best, ONLY. He is very happy with his Fein MM. Do keep in mind that all the attachments and accessories are pricey too. I have seen the infomercials and it does look like a great tool. Pops does all sorts of chit with his MM.

I'be been looking at one of these for a while too. I am seeing more and more wanna bees out there. I think ryobi has one and I even saw something similar at harbor freight. But personally I would probably stick with the fein, just because I cant help but want the highest priced tools:doah:. I guess I just like having nice stuff.

If you end up getting any of the other brands that are similar to the fein, please post up and tell us what you think.

I have heard nothing but great things about the Fein. Was having a discussion with a customer about it a month or two ago. He loves his and thinks the quality is excellent. Can't say about all the imitators that are popping up constantly anymore.

Definitely won't be going with something from HF. After my last couple Craftsman power tool purchases I'm a little leery about them, too. I don't know, maybe one from Bosch would be good? I was also looking at the Rockwell brand that Rockler Woodworking sells.

One thing I really want it for is the profile sander. I've a house full of molding + the cabinets that need to be sanded and painted. I'm not sure any of the others offer this. If I've got to buy that attachment from Fein I'm probably better just getting the Fein kit.

If you are getting it just for sanding molding and the curved profiles the have the Fein is awfully expensive to get just for that. The quality of the tools is worth it but I do believe DeWalt, Bosch and others make a good profile sander with all the attachemnts. The benefit of the fein is that it does a whole lot more than just profile sanding. It will flush cut door trim when replacing tile or wood floors, awsome at grout removal, will cut and nitch tiles and ceramics, grinde and remove mastics and tons of other woodworking tasks. If just for sanding get the other brands.

After doing a bunch of reading I think I'm going to go with the Fein. Mostly due to the large amount of grout work that is going to need to be done. Thanks for the input guys.

Do You have many carpentry tools now? Dremel, Roto-Zip(Bosch), A multitude of sanders available!

I recently picked up an attachment for my Roto-Zip to flush cut door jambs for said tile/hardwood install. I have a grout removal tool for my Roto-Zip, also a router base attachment. After all said and done i think i have spent 200 on tool and attachments! there is an attachment to put on a diamond blade, or wood cutting wheel!

Yes I Have a full size router, a Grinder(which i can put a diamond blade on), A dual-blade saw for trimming door jambs, and a multitude of other full size power tools.

My point is go online to Bosch, Dewalt(Black & Decker), Milwaukee, Porter Cable, Metabo, or any other brand you can think of there are a lot of multipurpose tools that would do what you need.

If it comes down to warranty most of these companies offer pretty good ones.

I bought a Dremel brand tool just like the Fein, does the same thing. Paid $100 at Lowes last year. Works great. There is no way the Fein is 4 times better.

Well, a main Fein factory is about 3 miles from my home. Everybody swears by it! One or two times a year there's a factory/christmas sale and the machines are always sold out within a week. Actually they reduced production (like everywhere) but best sell market right now seems to be overseas (that meant you guys!).

Maybe I should have bought one when I was in Germany. I wonder if I could buy an export model (110V/US plug) at the factory sale.

I wasn't planing on going back until sept, though.

gonna disagree there pal. Ive got a fein, probably double the power and much better quality than the dremel.

The thing you gotta understand about fein. they are a high end company, with a high end product that specifically caters to the professional.

The difference is much like craftsmen and snapon.
they both make a 9/16" wrench that does the same thing,
but if you don't use the tools day in and day out, the average garage mechanic wont see the value in buying top shelf stuff.

As a side note, Fein has two models. one sells for $179 and uses an allen key to change tips, and is a single speed unit.

the other runs about $379 iirc, and has a quick release chuck, and a variable speed motor.

the variable speed motor is invaluable when you are doing tight sanding work, believe it.
