going down the road today and ion the mediun was an older jep maybe a cj-5 with about 4 inches of lift and 35's, kind of plain you know, a real usable rig, not a juiced up street rig, and the guy had a cop behind him with the lights going and i look down and his whole drivers side axle and wheel are laying up next to the rig with the rear end laying in the asphalt with a big gouge in road leading to wher he stopped. I thought man thank sucks big time. it is bad enough when we break things having fun off road, but the guy was just driving down the road. What would have to happen to have your axle come complety out like that?

He broke the axle. The shafts on semifloating axles (like what comes in K5s) will seperate from the vehicle if it is to break since its held in by a clip in the differential.

An axle can come completly out like that w/ a c-clip axle. ( YES! c-clip axles are whats in a Blazer from the factory ) What happens is the clip pops off, for whatever reason, or the shaft breaks and the shaft, brake drum, and wheel will part company w/ the rig.

The only way to prevent this is to run c-clip eliminators, or a Full Float axle. And even w/ the eliminators, it IS possible to lose a wheel if it breaks off outside of the bearing. ( only seen that happen once. )

I get all the excercise I need pushing my luck!

Must've been an AMC Model 20 rear end - No C-Clips or anything, just a tapered bearing holding it all in. And once that bearing goes - that's all she wrote.

I actually had that happen to me on my old truck. I had a 454 in it with the stock 1/2 ton axles still in it. I heard a loud pop and I started moving but, luckily I was in a parking lot and my friends saw my wheel to start moving out from the body. I had them kick the wheel in until I got to a safe place to park it.

I broke it clean off about 2 inches from the end of the shaft where it went into the differential. I later upgraded to a 14 bolt that following summer!

Oh man... ouch. Sounds like this guy has my kind of luck for differentials LOL. I have the third one going south cause of a bearing falure and I haven't even wheeled this thing yet!

C-Clip eliminators suck for the street. They were designed for drag racing and they leak, all of them.

I have had three different c-clip axles in my truck and I have never had any problem. I had a 10 bolt, then a 12, now a 14 SF. The 14 SF has monsterous shafts, 33 spines, and C-clips. It's not as good as a full floater, but it holds up quite well.

Got to feel sorry for the Jeeper though. I guess it just goes back to what I've said for a long time. I don't really know what people see in Jeeps, as the driveline that comes in them is useless for any fourwheeling at any more than a stock level. You've got to swap out the whole thing to make a decent vehicle out of one.

Early Jeeps had a killer drivetrain - Dana 44FF rear, Spicer 30 front, T90 3 speed, Spicer 18 twin stick, and 5.34 gears - making an extremely capable rig in spite of a 70 HP engine.

how hard is it to install a full floater kit from ORD? sounds like it would be a worthy investment.

They are pretty easy - figure on a full afternoon to do it, plus time added for other jobs you decide to do while you're at it. I'm planning on doing mine once I get gainfully employed again, and add disc brakes, a better diff, and all new bearings and seals while I'm at it.

What about the CJ7s that came stock w/V8s and automatics? Or a CJ5/7 w/a factory V8 and a T-18? Are those drivetrains useless for any fourwheeling? That AMC 20 has a bigger ring gear than the 10 bolt that came in your truck, too. The stock Heep axles are no worse than stock Chevy axles. Plus, they don't have c-clips.

"I destroyed a 12 bolt with a stock 305. If you're putting in a big block, I don't care what you do to a 12 bolt, you've still got an 8.875" ring gear and if you lock it and beat on it, you'll break it."

I guess I always though that destroying a rear end would count as a problem, guess I was wrong again.
