Fender cutting question

So I think I'm just going to go all out and trim the bottom couple inches of the front fenders from the wheel well to behind the front bumper and then similarly the rear fenders from the rear of the wheel well to the rear bumper.
Decided I didn't want to mess with it again and also to eliminate some of the water traps I've found while just "nibbling" at the edges this afternoon. The other parts of the fenders/wheel wells will just be getting small trims.

Any hints or tips with this?
How high, anything in the way I should be careful for, what to use, etc?

Was using an air powered cut off wheel but think I'm going to go hit the big box store and pick up some 5" grinder cutting discs.
 
We used 4 icnh flat discs in my grinder . Then we bent the trim back and screwed it into the fender :thumb:

Of course with the tube bumpers I had to trim all 4 fender fangs too :laugh:

Well seeing how I have been in this process.. On the front fenders I measured 5 1/2 below the turn signal light and taped it off. The back of the front fenders I went back to where the wheel well lining bolts up and trimed that out, kinda flared it into the the rest of the fender.. As for the rear no triming at all.. hopefully I wont regret that later on in life.. Take at look at my project in signature block... And Good Luck

Being as it's a CUCV it doesn't have any trim to measure from but I think I can use the turn signal and rear lights as a basis for my measuring.
 
I line my laser level up about 3 nights a week just to look at what and how i want to cut the rear (front is done). I do not do well with tape. It's now to the point of just grabbing a hold and doing it. I'd like to cut it with a portaband, but will probably be done with 4" cutoff wheel.
 
i just used tape and a 4 and a half inch cut off but i really dont care how my rig looks...any chance to be a photo whore..i will prolly cut a whole lot more this winter cause im taking the truck down a few inches and getting 42s..

First cut is the deepest...

Wow was I wasting my time with the pneumatic cutting tool. 4.5"x.045 cutting disc in the angle grinder and raaaaaaawwwwwwwwwwww..........:grind:

The rear is cut at 16.5" down from the body line and the front will be about that, I'm going to go a little lower due to the inner fender well and where it joins the outer fender.


Gotta go buy some more cutting discs!

Yeah Right all gets easier after this!!!:p: Depends on how good you want it to look. Mine I want to look somewhat normal and decent. Others could probably care less since they will eventually run them into the rocks.. :crazy: You will probably have to do some welding and sealing and such since cutting that much off as to keep the mud out.. but maybe you like the rusty look..:rolleyes: alright enough from me.. That looks like a great start..
 
Carving sheetmetal is like getting ink. The first one you're a little apprehensive, but after that you just can't wait to do more. It's addictive...

obi, did you do anything to join those two pieces back together?


Iz, actually, so far, in the rear I've cut off one of the potential rusty spots. Got rid of that reinforcement bracket thingy behind the wheel well where stuff can accumulate. Sure enough mine had small pinprick rust holes at the bottom there.

The front I'm not sure of yet. I don't drive it in the winter so as long as I keep it clean I'm not terribly worried about it. Straight lines, no jagged edges, and no bad rust is about all I'm looking for anymore.
 
Did the front of my crew cab last night measured 3-7/8" below the side marker if that helps.
 
My line's right about 4.25". Figured a little bit of a lip might help keep crap from getting up in between the inner fender and the outer fender. We'll see. Cutting discs are cheap.

What I did was take the outer and inner fender and vice them together and welded along the seam, worked pretty good for me. :rolleyes: Looks good bud:D
 
I've got a stick welder but can't use it for crap. Sheet metal is out of my range. We'll see how it comes out and if I'm worried I'll go suck up to the guys at the local offroad shop and see who wants to weld it up for me.
 
I kept the open gap between the inner and outer skin of the fenders. Piching them together just creates a place for moisture, salt, mud and other debris to sit there and do it's thing.

My fangs are cut right at the bottom of the core, then a 1.5" strip all around the wheel opening. I ended up going through my marker light.
