Fender Idea...

This would seem like a very obvious part for the aftermarket to come up with for these trucks, so I am not gonna be suprised if someone says it already exists. Like myself, many just wheel their trucks ocasionally, an use them as their daily drivers. I would like the exterior of my truck to remain looking clean and stock (Bodywise). I wish someone made a front fender for the 73-80, and 81-87(91) trucks that had a wheel well opening that went further back, so I did not have to run the typical cut fender to clear my 35's. I did a quick before and after pic (Paintbrush) with my blazer as an example...

Heck, I'd buy one - but I bet the tooling would be pretty expensive for steel sheet. Perhaps fiberglass?

Not if it's made in a third world country. :D
I have access to such a place and know people that could do it, if there is enough demand I can get that rolling.
 
I was thinking of the fiberglass possibility myself. I am almost thinking about making them myself, I have done a bunch of fiberglass work, it would not be that big of a deal.

Now if you wanna do a nice thing, you can get another fender and open up the wheel well using parts from the other fender to make a longer lip for a factory look in steel.
I have done that and I have a friend doing that to a first gen on 39" tires.
 
That is exactly what I plan on doing anyways, as long as I am only doing it for my truck. It just got me thinking that it is ubsurd that the aftermarket has not covered this yet.

There is a fiberglass fender that is produced that has a bigger opening but also has a bulge, prerunner style, comes with a fiberglass hood too for a really light front clip. :D
 
I saw that while searching, but I dont like the pre-runner look on 4x4's, I think it looks goofy. I would love to see a really well made fiberglass fender, but I havent seen any good fiberglass aftermarket parts in years. I remember once when I was cutting up an old wrecked Baja Bug, and we couldn't break the fiberglass hood with a sledehammer, that is the type of fiberglass quality I want to see!

Well with the greed of companies these days you will need to MAKE your own if you want something that tuff.:rolleyes:
 
Unfortunately, that is true. I wouldn't be against adding additional fiberglass to the back of an existing production fender if it was at least made to look good externally. It would not be as good as getting the additional glass in on the original curing process, but it would probably make for a pretty damn solid fender. I think one of the popular vendors around here should look into making these, it would seem like a very nice bolt on solution for so many people! I mean GM had to have made at least a couple hundred of these trucks, right?;)
 
There is an 81 K30 here in town that has had "stretched" fenders since it was new it runs 38s on 14" wheels with only a 4" lift. I will see if I can get some pics
 
A body shop can do it. Just cut the fender and roll it. The only problem would be the chrome, but that will be a problem on a fiberglass or other metal fender that is stretched.

To make a fiberglass fender that is stretched... I probably can start working on that, using a real steel fender that I stretch and then make a mold off it, then making fiberglass reproduction.
 
ummm, stock fiberglass fenders are available at a pretty fair price... far easier to mod an existing as opposed to making molds..
 
On my Burb, we are moving all of the wheelwell opening out several inches and then welding the old wheel well corners back in place. After that just fill in patch panels and you have a stock appearing fender that has ALOT more room!
 
I am perfectly comfortable doing the metal work myself, it just seems like this should be covered by the aftermarket. I mean with how many companies are popping out aftermarket stock style fenders, it wouldn't seem like to big of a deal. And I think alot of people would buy them, assuming that they were reasonably priced.

just because they are widely available doesn't mean they are making them.. They're all being punched out in Taiwan from a single source...

Tho we may think it's a good product, I'm doubting it's a cost effective item for them to retool for...

Sectioning panels is not a simple chore to do CORRECTLY... I'm strongly considering the stock glass ones. not only much less work to mod, but won't rot...
 
True, it is not simple to do correctly, but if you take your time and have some patience, it is easier to turn out a quality product. :)
