I know what you mean. Big weird shaped molded piece with a knob on the top.
GM calls them insulators, part numbers were:

Hmm, can`t seem to find those anywhere on their site.

Since they are called insulators, I figure perhaps you are correct in thinking they are for blocking wind noise from whistling through the fenders, or something along the lines of forcing hot air under the vehicle, etc.

NEK, I'm about 99% sure I have a set or two kicking around if you really need them. I forgot to put them back in my truck...but it sounds like an airplane anyhow so I don't think they would have accomplished much.

they help keep the engine compartment a...compartment(negitive charge in compartment)...air goes thru radiator,.. w/o them some air goes around front of truck and thru the fenders...i've seen a hot running truck crawling around in mud/fields/woods, remedy his problem by putting those gap fillers in!
My base Blazer never had them but I would like to add them to cut wind noise down in winter howls!

Probably something the stripper trucks didn't have. I bet Big Ugly doesn't have them...hell, I can't even picture these whoosits.
Yeah, I hadn't seen them before, then noticed it on this truck. It may have even been a diesel thing, but I'm just speculating since my cab was originally diesel. Insulator for sound would make sense with the diesel, since the firewall is covered.

I've found them in 89-91 Blazer's, Subs, and a few trucks along the way but not too many prior to the 89-91 models (I pulled apart an '87 and no insulators). I haven't messed with too many diesels so not sure there. I'm fairly sure every 89-91 I have ever toyed with has had them..though I've never messed with an 89-91 base model.
As an aside, it is possible that they were part of a "regional" package. I know GM liked to do these sort of things...for instance, a base model pickup sold in SC would have a rear slider, but a base model pickup my way does not. Depending on their true design purpose they could have been part of a hot or cold weather regional package...I would presume cold as I have seen a number of them in New England...but thats assuming they are a regional thing?
