Those that work on their cars, a dying breed we are.
I'm looked at differently, like some kind of automotive wizard (though I don't know squat). It's sad really. I'm sure some people are terribly upset at the sight of my hobbies. (trucks, gun, quads, golf) (golf being a "waste" of land so I'm told)
But are most of the time, completely helpless with anything outside the office.
20 minutes ago my neighbor had his car towed to the dealership for a dead battery. He has two cars and ~5 auto stores within 2 miles. He didn't know it was a dead battery. He simply called the dealership and they came out and towed it back. If he and his wife didn't yell at each other (good or bad I don't know, don't understand Chinese, only Japanese) and if they didn't let their god damn fuking dog bark all day.....I would have jumped off my couch and helped him out. I have extra batteries he could have used temporarily.

opps, maybe this belongs in the lounge

I'm pretty much how it works around here too. People don't think all the noise is so bad when they figure out you can save them a couple of bucks.
..for a motor anyone can buy at Home Depot for 50 bucks..and put on in about 5 minutes!..I had a perfect used one I'd have given them and put on FREE,it was ony 4 bolts for crissakes!..the "professional" left the wires hanging out of the junction box too,and one of the wire nuts fell off a few days later--thats when they asked me if I thought that was "safe"..UM...NOOO!..but when I offered to put it back like it should have been, they tell me "no,I'll call that guy and have HIM do it RIGHT this time"...when he returned 4 days later,he tells them "I think your oil pump on the burner is "going",it doesn't sound right to me"...I told them to wait till it fails, they did,but reluctantly...they are STILL waiting too!...................................................................................................I just assume NOT fix things for family, friends or neighbors anyway though..they seem to think you'll do it for free, and give a lifetime warrantee on all parts and labor most of the time...but yes, there are a lot of clueless people when it comes to cars, trucks, anything "mechanical"...most of them distrust mechanics though, because they have been duped so many times by ones that are dishonest..."ya lady--your engine is SHOT"..when all it needed was a water pump or altenator that was screeching.............................................................................................I know a woman who was charged 600 bucks to replace "all the steel brake lines"..one week later, her brakes failed again,so she has my friend put it on his lift--we saw ONE new brake line about 3 feet long, spliced onto the original one, using compression fittings!..
