Those that work on their cars, a dying breed we are.
I'm looked at differently, like some kind of automotive wizard (though I don't know squat). It's sad really. I'm sure some people are terribly upset at the sight of my hobbies. (trucks, gun, quads, golf) (golf being a "waste" of land so I'm told) But are most of the time, completely helpless with anything outside the office.

20 minutes ago my neighbor had his car towed to the dealership for a dead battery. He has two cars and ~5 auto stores within 2 miles. He didn't know it was a dead battery. He simply called the dealership and they came out and towed it back. If he and his wife didn't yell at each other (good or bad I don't know, don't understand Chinese, only Japanese) and if they didn't let their god damn fuking dog bark all day.....I would have jumped off my couch and helped him out. I have extra batteries he could have used temporarily.

:doah::rolleyes:

opps, maybe this belongs in the lounge

I enjoy golf, plus i only need the driver. It puts and drives.... And cart driving is the best

drink girls are the best :)

If I didn't have golf courses around here, I'd just have more strip malls, apts, condos, or whatever else holds the masses.

There is definitely a lot of people out there that don't know squat about routine maintenance stuff nowadays. I had someone bring me an ATV to fix a while ago that he said was down on power.... He had an oil leak and just let it keep on leaking until their was no oil left in the motor :doah: Needless to say he needed a very expensive complete rebuild.

I worked through engineering school as an ASE certified mechanic. That was a decade ago, but to this day, nobody has touched any of my cars, but me. Like you guys, most of my neighbors would rather change their oil with their credit card than with a wrench.

It didn't take them long to file noise complaints to the home-owners association after I moved in (welder, air compressor, pneumatic tools, stereo system in garage, etc). But once they figured out that I'll help them fix their cars/lawnmowers/boats, the complaints stopped....weird.

Now when they see (or hear) me working in the garage, all the dudes in the neighborhood come over to get their man-cards stamped. It's kinda cool, really.

:haha: I'm pretty much how it works around here too. People don't think all the noise is so bad when they figure out you can save them a couple of bucks.

You folks have it easy.
I wish people would just bring me their cars to diagnose.

NOOOOO, they gotta bring me cars, trucks, computers, Ipads, sprinkler controllers, electric fence chargers, TVs, lawn mowers, tractors, insulation foam sprayer control boards, dildos, toy cars, electronic pill counters, guns, fish shockers, deer feeders, telescopes, microscopes, video cameras, depth finders, weather stations.

Then, I get the calls.............
My windmill quit, my well pump won't prime, I can't pick up my favorite TV station, my roof leaks, there is something moving under the house, a UFO just landed in the back yard and they are asking for directions to your place, my barely legal hot teenage daughter needs personal instruction.........

Well........Some calls are less of an imposition than others.........

I'm just turning 19 and I have a lot of book smart friends. When I was redoing my 14 bolt (wire wheel/paint, bearings, regear) I was putting my pictures on my facebook album because I'm to lazy to clear off my hard drive. So many people just couldn't get over that I was able to do simple things with this axle. I got so many pms asking what shop was doing this and that and blah blah blah. What do these people do? Like honestly? I don't know much and people know even less than me. I couldn't imagine not having the know how, let alone tools in my house. The American youth, much like the contents of my bowls after taco bell is going down the toilet fast.

A LOT of people here have more money than they do brains, and too often I see things like a garden tractor get used until it seizes up from lack of oil,and was never properly maintained...then instead of letting someone like me fix it ,they just scrap it,and buy a new one...its sinful,to see some of the stuff that lands at the scrapyard, many nice machines got crushed just because some goober didn't realice it wouldn't start because he left the blades turned on ,or a seat safety switch was defective, battery cable was junk,etc......................................................................................I dont fix anything for my neighbors, most of them dont even know me, and the few who do,rarely need my help, they would rather throw money away to buy something new or hire a "professional" to come fix busted things, instead of letting me work on it....like the 2 women next door, one day their furnace had the hot air blower fan quit...instead of asking me to look at it,they call their oil dealer instead...the guy just puts a brand new motor on the fan and charges them 180 bucks.....for a motor anyone can buy at Home Depot for 50 bucks..and put on in about 5 minutes!..I had a perfect used one I'd have given them and put on FREE,it was ony 4 bolts for crissakes!..the "professional" left the wires hanging out of the junction box too,and one of the wire nuts fell off a few days later--thats when they asked me if I thought that was "safe"..UM...NOOO!..but when I offered to put it back like it should have been, they tell me "no,I'll call that guy and have HIM do it RIGHT this time"...when he returned 4 days later,he tells them "I think your oil pump on the burner is "going",it doesn't sound right to me"...I told them to wait till it fails, they did,but reluctantly...they are STILL waiting too!...................................................................................................I just assume NOT fix things for family, friends or neighbors anyway though..they seem to think you'll do it for free, and give a lifetime warrantee on all parts and labor most of the time...but yes, there are a lot of clueless people when it comes to cars, trucks, anything "mechanical"...most of them distrust mechanics though, because they have been duped so many times by ones that are dishonest..."ya lady--your engine is SHOT"..when all it needed was a water pump or altenator that was screeching.............................................................................................I know a woman who was charged 600 bucks to replace "all the steel brake lines"..one week later, her brakes failed again,so she has my friend put it on his lift--we saw ONE new brake line about 3 feet long, spliced onto the original one, using compression fittings!.....
