I pulled a ashtray out of a truck I bought for parts and it has the fiber optic astray light. The bulb plugs in the cluster and is suppose to travel through the fiber optics and light the ashtray but mine only puts out enough light so you can see it if you are looking dead at it.No way in hell it would light anything up.I was thinking about just drilling out the ashtray and putting a glove box light in it.But did the fiber optic ashtray lights ever work?Or was it just some experimentation gm had going on?

I don't think they did a whole lot. I suppose if they originally faced a surface that was shiny they would have been effective. Can't recall what they point towards.

i think the reason its dim is other wise the under dash would glow at night its not sealed so when the lifghts are on it would be glove has a switch, and is better sealed.
its only so you can find it when open and not burn the carpet with a cig.
agreead to dim though

Mine works. It isn't bright, but I wasn't going to read by it anyway. It beats fumbling around on the dash.

I've had those in vehicles that were smoked in and ones that weren't. The unsmoked ones are brighter.

I've honestly never even looked to see if mine works. My ash tray is full of random nuts and bolts and other junk, has been since I bought it 2 years ago.

I might actually have to go out there to see if mine still works or not now....

Comes on with the headlights/gauge lights. If the gauge cluster bulb feeding it is burnt out, it doesn't work.

oh yeah its burnt out then, ill finally figure out how to use this craftsman meter i bought a while ago.
