the red truck got a thick coat of primer and half blocked out today so will be ready for color this week end! I have a line on a tci maximizer still hunting for som 8-lus so I can put the built 3/4 toun axles under the 1979 k5...

Still need to find a set or 1 tun axles and an atlas doubler for the 1977 so will just putt her around da hood till I find da parts.... she need 40's and I need to steal her np203 dor the 19's gm doubler...

Then I changed my mind

Here is what I'm thinking with the two trucks now that I do not need a street truck.... The yellow 1977 k5 will be a fun mud truck and with 8" of lift and the 3/4 ton built axles and bigger tires 38 or 40 she will be fun for and hi for that kind of joy.

The red 1977 k5 I'd like to make a crawler... I'd start by making the rear bed sides removable.... The fiberglass k5 is made with a solid fiberglass panel connecting the bed to the top of the 1/4 panel on the interior so that panel will become like a second set of 1/4 panels that are set back much further almost next to the frame..... The front clip can be removed quick and there are no pinch welds on the fire wall so I have a little more clearance then a factory cab but think it will still be best to move the front axle forward as much as I can.... This way the truck can sit on 35" and see a drive around the block now and then and can be changed to run 42" or more for off road crawling use with all the room I can give her for travel & keeping the truck as low as possible, right now it has 4" of lift and it seem more stable then the yellow k5 for off roding other then mud...... I have seen k5's on 44"s with the bed cut and narrowed front with out much lift...

I have a line on a 1 ton set and she'll get them now.

puting her together

I installed the grill, head lights, headlight doors, marker lights, some trim, mirrors and the door handles along with the vent windows today... I also pulled the harness that had been all cut up and replaced it with the very good harness that was pulled from the 1979 downer k5. I called speedglass and they are no longer making lexan windows for the k5 :dunno: so I'm putting in a factory glass window tomorrow. I will try and paint the under dash dash pad and door panels tomorrow, they are all going vivid red awlgrip.

A lot of the parts I installed are dirty but new so will look better after there washed...

I still have some things I want to do to each truck...
The yellow 77 needs the 3/4 ton built axels put in, gauges and the roll cage. I am now building a roof rack that matches the steps & bumpers.
The red 79 still needs a soft top, some steel cusom bumpers, roll cage and a 1 ton set. I may make the 1/4 removable and tub it and toss some long travel by pass shocks under her.
The hard work is finished & they have taken about 8 months labor..... I dont want any thing more to build so I think I'm finished......................................................................................................

How did I miss this till now?

What are you doing with that old tub? Please don't tell me you're crushing it.

The white 74 tub got tossed on the 1/2 ton 79 frame the red fiberglass tub was sitting on, the 79 frame had a 4" lift 305ci engine auto t350 and 35" tires. I pulled any thing worth taking off the 74, the hard top, a/c parts the frame down had a built 350 with headers and a 1 ton axle set that had been geared sitting on 44" that went under my fiberglass tub. the hard top will go on my yellow 77 when I do the 1/2 ton axles..

I traded the white tub on the 79 chassis for an air boat.
I had no need for it and no air boat so it worked out
