I got stuck in a few holes yesterday that were pretty deep. Right up to my rockers. So i noticed that there was a film ontop of the water that looked just like gas. it didnt smell like gas but it spread int he water like it was. I'm not ruling out that it could be oil but where should I start looking?

I'm going to check my fluids today obviously but my diffs have extended breathers on them and my tranny and tcase tops were above the water.

Btw does atf closely resemble gas when in water?

It takes about one drop of petroleum products in water to cause what looks like a slick. I wouldn't worry about it at all, even some spillage on a front axle from an oil fill could do it.

Less than 15 parts per million of any petroleum/hydrocarbon based product will leave a visible sheen on the water. Probably nothing...

Think of it this way... if oil can get out, water can get in. Check everything with oil in it for water contamination. If you don't find water contamination your fine.

Thats really good to know. I guess it was that couple drops of ATF chillin on my tcase from when i flushed it :D

Thanks guys!

sh!t dude, there's enough oil clinging to the bottom of my truck to slick a good sized lake.
