I procrastinated this long enough.

Went out to eleventy-billion parts stores today until I found the timing set I wanted. So that part is behind me at least.

Now I had to take the core support off to get the job done.....why you ask....?

I have a recovering cracked rib and climbing around the engine bay is out of the question. I tried it, then cussed a few times.
The truck looks cool with the whole front end missing though. The wife even agrees.:haha:

This is not normal....

how did it happen? Some previous idiot with a hammer?
Normal wear and tear?

The balancer is bad as you've discovered. The rubber after many years of use or oil saturation will start to turn to mush ans the outer ring will move in either direction (in your case towards the engine). If the timing cover doesn't have a hole wore through it then you can reuse it but that balancer will need replacing. You can get a nice balancer from summit racing but you will need to know what diameter yours is, it appears to be an 8" from the looks of it. You will also need to make sure that the new balancer has the timing marks in the correct place. Yours are behind the water pump and those are a little harder to find but not impossible. You can always buy a balancer with the timing marks closer to the driver side and buy a new coaver to match and you'd be all set.

Let me know if you want me to help and i can help you choose the correct parts.

EDIT: That appears to be a 305 balancer by the looks of it. Do you know for sure what engine size you have?

It's a 305.

I would like to get a cheap/quality balancer then. I'm not going to play the rice game and sink money into a 305.....

Any part #'s you could come up with would be great.
As for adding a new cover to it....I would rather re-use what I have. If there is a hole I guess I'll change my mine. I'll get the cover off in the next hour or so and we'll go from there.

I need to know the diameter and also the thickness of the outer ring (the piece that moved). Also give me a year and model of vehicle.

The balancer is 6 11/16 x 1 5/8

1987 V10

The timing cover is not really damaged at all. Just the paint rubbed off of it.

The first one, 161350 is only 1.25" thick and i'm betting that none of them have the timing mark in the correct place. The balancer you have is a VERY hard one to find. You would be much better off buying a new cover that matches the balancer you buy or one that doesn't have a permanent timing tab and rather use a bolt on timing tab.

Wonderfull.

I guess I should get whatever you suggest. You're the expert here.
Do you have any links I can check out to get an idea on the price?

Here is the timing cover you should use.

Here is the balancer you should use if you want the same diameter.

Here is your other option if you want to use the 8" balancer instead.

This is the timing tab you'll need with the smaller balancer.

This is the timing tab you'll need with the larger balancer.

If it were me i would use the larger diameter balancer and the correct tab. You can always swap it to a 350 for future use and the larger the balancer is the better it can reduce harmonics.

Another question...
If I get a balancer that is a different thickness than the original one will it cause the belts to be out of alignment?
I ask because the crank pulley bolts to the front of the balancer.

I need to make this order today.

Yes, those are the pieces i would buy.

You don't need to worry about the cam button since you're not using one anyways.

The thickness of the damper is further towards the timing cover so the pulleys won't be affected.

If the difference in the damper is towards the timing cover, then will it rub the cover?

Not trying to be a pain, just want to get it running again ASAP
