I was told the engine in my K5 was out of a 1991 2wd truck. My problem is the oil filter leaks, it doesn't appear to be the right one. It seems the right size but when i screw it on the inside of the filter hits one of the bolts before it seals . I checked both bolts and they are tight. The old filter was gouged on the inside where someone forced it on. I got a new one (WIX 51060) and it also hits the same bolt.
My original assumption was that it was not a 91 engine but after looking on the wix website all the tbi years seem to be the same filter. It had a tbi when i got it and center bolt valve covers. But i dont know that it is the original block.

Is there a way to date the block to make sure its a 91?
And if it is a 91 any ideas?

someone might have used NON factory correct bolts to hold the adapter to the block and this could be why there hitting the filter .

a 51060 and 51061 are both good units for these vintage units with just a 5psi pressure max difference . so the one you got should be good to go .

can you post a pic of the adapter to the block with the bolts showing ? before the filter is installed on the engine .

All those gm engines that vintage will take that Wix 51060.

I suspect the filter is hitting the bolt going into the adapter at the block if there are scratch marks inside

Ill get a picture tomorrow. And yes I also believe that is the bolt it is hitting. The marks on the filter look to line up with the rear bolt and marring can be seen on the bolt.

Here are a couple pictures of the old filter.

What brand is that filter? I presumed you were using Wix by the part number. May be worth looking at that as well, this particular filter may be shaped different

Aside from the bolt, obviously

I think an acdelco because of the color but im not sure, it as no markings. It was on the motor when i purchased it. The new filter i purchased is the wix one I listed. Both filters make contact with the bolt head on the adapter.

Sounds like wrong adapter bolts somehow were used. If I remember right when I did my filet adapter housing gasket, they were very thin heads on them. Like a 1/8 inch.

Pics are not showing up
Im running the wix 51061
In both mine and my daughtmy daughter blazers

This is one of my amsoil filters.

Seems like that filter isn’t being made right. That top ring is way too big, shouldn’t be almost covering the holes like that.

Notice how the top ring doesn’t encroach into the center like yours are showing.

I don't think so. The filter i pictured isnt a wix one. I think it was an ac delco. It was on the truck when i purchased it. I put a wix 51060 on when i changed the oil and it leaked. I took the wix back off to compare it to the old one and thats when i noticed the damage on the old filter. The new wix filter also had a small scratch in the same place. I think the old filter leaked when installed so whoever put it on tightened it with a wrench until it stopped leaking.

Since everyone seems to use that filter on every year my guess now is that the bolts are wrong. They might be really close but just a little bit deeper head.
Does anyone have a part number for the bolts? All i can find is the adapter.

What is involved with taking the adapter out? Just those two bolts and it falls out?
Its only hitting one bolt, maybe the bolts aren't the same and they're swapped.

You posted while i was typing. I does look like that old filter may have been bad. Maybe it was bad so they had to force it on damaged the adapter somehow how.

That adapter and bolts look 100% oem. I would bet lunch it’s something fishy with the filters.

Seems unlikely two separate brands likely purchased at different stores a couple years apart both have the same problem. But definitely a possibility lol.
I need another one anyway so ill get one tomorrow and gently tighten it as to not damage it if the bolt hits it.

Here’s a quick pic of the adapter and bolts for reference. Apparently a gasket is available for between the adapter and block but no one ever uses them. I wonder if someone stacked a gasket or two in there. That would cause the filter to bottom out on the adapter before the sealing rubber hits the block.
