Finding the right oil filter

Here’s a quick pic of the adapter and bolts for reference. Apparently a gasket is available for between the adapter and block but no one ever uses them. I wonder if someone stacked a gasket or two in there. That would cause the filter to bottom out on the adapter before the sealing rubber hits the block.

Look closely

The one you posted is a later unit. Looks like the bolts sit just a tad deeper the the one the OP shows on his block

Yeah I tried searching the difference between those two casting numbers but couldn’t find anything other than maybe the bypass is different?

the bolts on the engine now have built in washers by the looks .

the adapter and bolt pic posted show a shoulder bolt and there not as tall .

i can see were its rubbing the head of the bolt .

Removed the adapter. It had one gasket which I also removed and discarded. Put the adapter back in and had to get the bolts uncomfortably tight fot the adapter to seat. With the adapter out of the truck and the filter screwed on its easy to see the interference. And yes my bolts have a built in washer not a shoulder.

This was the 4th filter ive tried so I'm pretty sure they're not the problem. I think its the bolts.
Im going to order a new adapter that comes with bolts.

Bottom of washer to top of the head is .302 inches which I believe is just under 5/16. If anyone has access to one a measurement would be awesome. If not
new bolts should be here Monday so Ill measure them .

those are the WRONG bolts like i said .

glad your figuring this out and getting a new adapter and the matching correct bolts . someone at some point screwed this up with the wrong bolts for sure .

New bolts finally showed up. Didn't get a picture but they measured .234 inches from top of head to bottom of shoulder. Also they are 7/16 head the old ones were 1/2.

Filter felt good when installing. I could feel the seal hit the adapter and then it slowly got tight instead of the hard stop it had before. It has been installed about an hour with no leaks. Unfortunately I cant start the engine until i get the transfer case back in and refill the transmission. But im pretty confident it is fixed. Thank you to everyone that helped!
