I ripped out my AC & Heat and now I'm wondering what the best way to proceed to cover the holes in the firewall is. My first thought was sheetmetal but I don't know a whole lot about it and the stuff at HD is paper thin. Then I thought, WWRD? "What Would Ryoken Do?". Fiberglass laminated wood would be easier to shape / work with and I could mount stuff to it easier.

Probably crazy idea but looking for suggestions...

thx

if you want to use sheet metal go down to the local machine shop. they throw away anything small. I have pulled 2 foot by 3 foot pieces of sheet metal out of the scrap pile at my dads shop. they will probably let you have it for nothing. if you want a cheap metal supply for life bring a case of beer with you.

metal would be easier to work with then fiberglass over wood. you can cut it with snips if its thin enough. you can pound it into shape. rivet it to the firewall. lay down a thin layer of bondo, sand it smooth, rattle can paint it.

look for a cover on Ebay. They are a little pricey but look clean.

Holy Crap! I never even knew these covers existed until I read this thread and went right to Ebay and ran a search. I ordered me one for my 86 Blazer. I have been wanting to ditch my AC for a while now but coundn't figure out the best way to do it. You just saved me a lot of time and trouble. Thanks for the info.

funny stuff

yeah, migged in sheetmetal is the way to go.. I went with some 18 g I had laying around..

Just make sure ya stagger your welding as to not warp it..

or ya could just overlap it, lay a bead of silicone and rivet it..

Thanks for the replies. I'm going to research the premade cover route and failing that, I'll dig up some 18g sheet metal and go with that.
