So I recently came across a camper special with a 454 I scored for 200 bucks. It DID run before i got ahold of it. I was doing the plugs and wires and just pulled them off the cap thinking I would just put the wires back the way they are supposed to go. I had them in order 1 8 4 3 6 5 7 2 and no start, just a small backfire through the carb. My number 1 on the cap is the front right prong (front as in closest to me) then I go in order clockwise. I even tried plugging in starting on the other side and still no start? What have I done? To top it off I compared the order to my blazer with a 350 and the blazer's number one starts on the left about 7:30? I thought it was supposed to be the front right prong. I really should have written down how the wires were before I pulled them off. Any ideas on whats going on here?

Pull the #1 plug (front driver side plug) and have a friend help you. Put your finger/thumb over the plug hole and have your buddy give it a small crank until your finger blows off the hole then make sure you align the timing marks and THIS is TDC. Now pull the cap and see where the rotor is pointing and put the #1 wire there then run the firing order in a clockwise direction. I'll bet that someone installed the dizzy a tooth or more off and then just ran the plug wires starting from where ever the rotor pointed rather than installing the dizzy where it should be.

in the future, a marker or masking tape and pen are your friend..

you've lost the #1 post.... find TDC on #1 cylinder (ds front plug) pull plug, turn over with finger over plug hole till you feel compression. continue turning motor over till timing line reaches the timing pointer.... pull dizzy cap.. notate rotor orientation... corresponding tower to where rotor is pointed is #1...... lace clockwise from that point... 18436572

edit... dammit Scott! :haha:

Awesome. I will be getting on that bright and early tomorrow. Yea marking the wires would have been the smart way to do it. I should know by now. Thanks guys. This site is the best.

never a$$um its correct before :haha:

seen people get dist in wrong and just move firing ourder around cap till it runs.

i always swap parts 1 at a time in tuneup jobs for this 1 reason like you just found out.

but that's the doc recommended treatment! :haha: actually it's both hands.... :eek1:

pretty scary for a wrench turner... at least when my knees went out, once you get where ya gotta go, you can still do the work.... hands, thats my livelyhood.. :eek1::eek1:

thankfully it really isn't bothering me during the day much, but at night it's been brutal.......

I've been polling random, old, secretary woman to see if the surgery was successful for them! :haha:

i'll chalk one up on the + side.... focked part is, i'll have to do one hand at a time...

well it turns out that #1 ended up being at about 1 o'clock, go figure. Im pretty sure the wires were not in the right order when I pulled them off though, so all in all at least the firing order is correct now and it runs better. Up next is fixing that noisy exhaust leak, at least I hope thats what it is. Figure Ill throw some headers on there. thanks guys

Wow this post went all over :eek1: from finding a firing order to smacking peepee , to carpol tunnel , to fixing that , back to curing the orginal prob. :haha:
