Im considering a clean early K5 and wanted to know if the first gens have the same potential frame cracking issues around the steering box as later years? Also curious as somebody here mentioned 3/4 ton PU`s have thicker frames and dont tend to have problems?
Happy fourth of July !!!

Some of the first gens come with a frame brace from the factory, but it's just a plate sandwiched inside the frame. Mine has one and no issues so far, but I haven't been that hard on it.

There's no difference in frame size between a 1/2 and 3/4 ton as far as I know. The running gear was the only relevant difference.

From what I have noticed the braces came on 71 and 72 models. I have never seen either one without one, but that doesnt mean they arent out there. My 70 GMC 4x4 Burb doesnt have it and my 71 and both 72's do.

my 71 has a extra layer of frame inside where the box is. Haven't had a problem yet but also have hydro assist which takes alot of pressure off the box

Mine cracked the frame behind the box on the bottom and the side, and it had the factory plating.

If you ever need a reason to strengthen your frame though here is my old 83. The box ripped out, flipped over and took out radiator. Frame horn bent down and took 8 hours to straighten up, grind out cracks and weld up, grind down welds and weld on a ORD brace, then bolt on a frame brace.
