Hey folks, I'm new here, I did a lot of searching but couldn't find what I needed. I bought an 89 K5 with a 350 this winter, it's rusty and wore out so I decided to put a rebuilt engine in it over the winter. I'm an ok shade tree mechanic, grew up on a farm so I do ok but had never swapped an engine before. Anyway, got the engine all in, no real troubles and get it started this morning, sounds good adjust the timing all is well. I go to shut it off and it won't die, radio, etc goes off inside the cab but the engine stays running. Never came across this before, new one on me. So I thought maybe I had wired the starter wrong as there were no leads on the wires they were just wrapped around the bolts when I took the old engine out. So I swapped the two small wires on the solenoid, then it wouldn't even start, so obviously that's not right. Swapped them back and now it won't start at all either. Cranks ok, have power in the cab, power to the alternator, power to the block on the firewall but no start. I couldn't check for a spark as I was working on it alone. Anyone have a clue? Could I have fried the coil? I don't see any fuses on the wires from the solenoid up so don't think that's it either.

Oh and so hopefully I'll get the starting fixed, does anyone have any ideas as to why the key switch wouldn't turn the truck off? I'm sure I've got all the wires connected right, only one way to connect them basically. When i pulled the coil wire it would die but other than that nothing worked. I don't believe it's the key switch either worked fine before and didn't look broken when I took the column apart.

Sorry for the long post and I appreciate any help. It's been fun working on this truck I just really want to take it for a drive!!!

Ok I'm the first to admit I'm an idiot. It was just a burned fuse to the ECM. So, now it's running again but it still won't turn off. Does anyone have any ideas as to what might cause it to keep running even when the switch is off?????

I've been over the wiring a dozen times and just can't see any thing that is hooked up wrong. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks so much.

Have you tried replacing the ignition switch at the base of the steering column?

When you turn off the key it turns of the power to the coil thats how it shuts off, that would be the only way that it would stay running is that is not happening

I seem to recall an 88 Blazer that my buddy had that did this. I think it was the alternator back feeding the ignition to allow the engine to stay running.

The alternator could be the issue here. the alternator can back power the coil and keep the engine running. Usually this happens when someone upgrades the alternator and either leaves off the alt light or eliminates the resistor wire.

See this post for more info and a simplified wiring diagram of where the resistor needs to be inserted. See post #8

Hope that helps.
