Floor mounted, cable operated auto trans shifters...

Art Carr/Winters for the win...

:waytogo:

I have my AC shifter installed straight to the floor in my truck and my seat tops sit a little higher than the top of the stock center console. It wouldnt be hard to mount it a little higher with some longer angle iron or something. But Boz42's setup is probably the way to go if I was going to keep it in the truck. :waytogo: I had to throw mine in as a temp emergency fix right before I left tdy. My tilt column self destructed on me right before I left and I was right in the middle of a unit move. Had to have some way to get to and from work the last couple of weeks and to be able to move the truck around the driveway while I am gone. The only replacement column I had available was the one I picked up from Icehouse for my manual 465/205 swap. I ran it this way for a couple of weeks and liked it. I like the AC shifter so much that I would seriously consider not swapping in the manual trans and staying with my 700r4. But then I drive my truck around a bit and realize the transmission is going to need so much work that I am better off doing the manual swap since I picked up all the parts.:doah::D

I have the B&M truck Megashifter with turbo 400. Shifts good. Rachet works good. Its at the right height. Its close in height to the ORD twin stick. Have lubed cable. Even spaced the spring loaded shifter arm on valve body. But if I could do it all over I would not buy this again. B&M quality is on the sucky side. I drove a buddy's truck with the Lokar shifter. I would buy the Lokar. It comes in different lever lengths. Lokar quality is top notch. I use Lokar speedo and throttle cables. Hope this helps.

GREAT pictures, thank you. And after seeing them, I don't think I like it either. lol

I'm a little slow this morn, that went right over my head.. wait, it's afternoon, see told ya, braindead... I got boat on the brain...

for a ratchet shifter thats similar, the B&M doesn't hold a candle to a Hurst as Scott mentioned... the V-Matic 2 is a far superior shifter to the B&M counterpart...

the real question is which style of shifter is wanted, a ratchet or gated.... they both definitely have advantages.. the gated AC's are pretty bulletproof..... unless ya lay the cable on the exhaust...

I DO like that one, even though it looks similar.. As for ratchet or gated, I have no idea which I want. I don't know enough about these things to make an informed decision, thus the reason for this thread.

Joe I hope you don't mind a slight hi-jack here. I'm pretty much an auto n00b having run a SM 465 and NV4500 in my previous rig. My current 90 has the 700R-4 which is growing on me, but my column shifter is so sloppy it's not even funny anymore.

My question is from a drivability standpoint never having used a ratchet shifter. Can they be pulled straight back into "Drive" easily? The gate style I understand, the detent style like the Lokar obviously i understand, the ratchet style is the fuzzy part for me from an ergonomic standpoint.

while i'm hi-jacking a little, the Lokar (paging Brett...) is detent...does it lock into each position unless the button is pushed? My only concern is the shifter getting knocked up out of drive and into neutral.

High jack all ya want man, I want to learn that stuff too. I did check out some youtube videos to familiarize myself with the way they work and the shifting process.

b&m mega shifter for taller truck use was o.k.

but the rubber boot dry rotted vary fast. and the unit was just kind of chinsy i think for the prices.

lokar has lots of options even a cable adaptor for stock colume shift linkage replacement.

and i have there 23" long blacknight 2 bend on my th400 with pistion shifter knob on it.

i like it real good. good quality and shifts good felling wise. and the 23" long handle is perfect placement just like a 4 speed shifter.

i got the one that clamps to the tranny and is 1 shift rob no cable . it was set to fit in my stock 4 speed hole from my old 465/205 combo. even with the boot on it it fools lots of people.

pic 3 = simple hiem joint linkage rod 1 little s bend needed
pic 4 = all the way in 1st gear still lots of seat clearence

No offense, nothin personal, but...Barf. Not into that look at all. I'd like something with the lighted gear indicator thingy, neutral and reverse lock out stuff etc. If I wanted it to look like a std trans truck, I would swap in a std trans.

After seeing ya'all's recommendations, I went back to Summit and looked at some of the Hurst shifters.

I really like this Pro-Matic-

And this V-Matic 2-
http://www.summitracing.com/parts/HUU-3838520/

The Pro-Matic has a 15" tall stick, seems like it would work nicely on a truck floor.

The PO installed a B&M Magnum pro shifter probably because the column shifter lever was broken clean off the column. I hate it because it has a reverse lockout lever and being mounted so low, when you're in the mud or rocks it sucks having to reach down and flipping the lever and the seat belt gets in the way. I need to move it up much higher some how. Its the same shifter in this shifter tech article http://www.pirate4x4.com/tech/billavista/shifter/
This article gives me some hope though.

the V-Matic 2 is a dual pattern ratchet shifter.. here's the way it works... to get out of park you have to lift the reverse lockout to get into reverse... then you lift it again to get into nuetral...

now this is where it gets fun... when in neutral you have 2 modes.. detent mode, where you just pull back to go to drive, 2, 1.. whatever... no reverse lockout movement.. it just clicks between the gears...

mode 2.. ratchet - when in neutral, you can push down on the shifter and pull back, ya hear a click, your in drive.. at this point the shifter has tensioned slop in it... to get in first, just keep banging it back... then when ya wanna go thru the gears you just smash the shifter forward, it'll click and get sloppy each time... it will do this up to neutral again.. at that point it pops back into the "upper detent portion" of neutral... you need to lift the reverse lockout to move it up to reverse, again to park...

never ran one in a truck, but they are a sh*tload of fun in a hotrod... might be annoying trying to rock, reverse to forward... that's also why I removed the one gate on the AC shifter, so on the one side of the pattern you could just slide it from drive to reverse.. gated on the other side... same with the reverse mvb i'm going with, just reverse to first to reverse, yada.....

it's been awhile since I've driven something with the B&M.. iirc, it is slightly different in that you need to pull the reverse lockout for all the upper detent gears.. and also, you engage the ratchet mode in drive, not neutral.... someone correct me if I'm wrong on the B&M...

I never liked their shifters from 25 yrs ago.. they just always seemed a bit flimsy... they can work, and sometimes good, I just don't like how they feel...

and here's a gated for a 700r4... i put a red spot where it had a gate... just makes it much easier to street drive with the one gate not there....

Art Carr is out of business but Winters Shifters made the Art Carr shifters and still sells ones just like them. I run an Art Carr shifter in my Chev.

Ancient thread.... I’m searching past posts before starting a new thread. but how do you like the shifter?

I see people like the Lokar, how close do these shifters get to an ORD twin stick and TH350
