For the love of BUGGIES

I believe the green and white is original. It's first outing was big bear 2024 60th anniversary

I have EVERYTHING to assemble a mid travel car with several transmission options to choose from… I just need a body and some time. Unfortunately I get the feeling the new resorter body is going to be 6-10 grand? Just too hard a pill to swallow. Even if I could afford it, I want something I can get dirty and scratch, and abusing a 20 thousand dollar toy is just too much for me to wrap my head around

I asked several times if one of the manufacturers in San Diego would consider building a low sided version, or cut and clean up the edges of a body (basically remove the middle of the car) and just sell the thing in two pieces -couldn’t get the guy to respond.

Also Thought about chopping the nice red body that I had , but ended up with some lack of storage issues when I got laid off earlier this year- just decided to sell both trailers that I was paying to store 240 bucks a month… and the red body was IN one of those trailers so it had to go too ‍♂️

The red one doesn't look right
The edges of the glass (fiberglass- not windshield glass)
look brand new, so I’m guessing it’s the new style? They told me all about it and gave me some cool Meyers Manx pins… nice guys! But this was several months ago and I’m not remembering the details

Appears the red one may the new remastered

Yup! Looks like the very same car! They hadn’t put anything up on the website at the time I snapped the photos… I was very excited, but then found out it costs 6-8 grand for their standard body ☹️

just got back from a long offroad trip around death valley and surrounding areas

found this old tunnel buggy up in the mountains of Nevada with some old mining equipment

it would seem i have a lot of buggy pictures to share - gonna start dropping a few in here more frequently.

the silver-colored car that i posted in the beginning of this thread was eventually stolen from my desert place, and a year later found it sitting in a yard 15 miles away. scary nazis were running a chop shop there, and after avoiding a gun fight with them, the cops couldn't make it out there that night... gave the nazis time...
I found out a week later that they used my call / complaint as an excuse to get a warrant. they had been looking for an excuse to get in there for quite a while. only problem for ME was that the nazis had seen me and my girlfriend checking out the buggy, then they walked me down the street with guns in hand as i reversed down the road slowly (45acp in one hand) while begging the sheriffs to send someone...

The nazis knew what was up- when the cops went in with a warrant a week later, and recovered stolen cars, tools, bikes, from many other people, but MY car had been stripped... and the frame had been chopped in half, and then plastered back together with pieces of other cars, jack handles, horrible welds, bars from weight lifting sets and a variety of dirty scrap metal. complete meth-douchery. i was told they intended to turn it into a 4 seater and were going to try and sell it/ flip it quickly to get it out of there.

anyway, i had to take a day off work and drive out there to pick up the hulk and haul it away from the sheriff's station. I still have the rear shocks and a few other parts like the transmission, and shifter... but the motor was gone, and the car was scrap metal.

R.I.P. Silver car!!

anyway, after the silver car was stolen, I've been on an unending journey of buying and selling stuff. pretty much always have a "right now" buggy of some kind, and a project "someday" dream buggy going in the background. have given up on some and traded, changed direction, and all kinds of stuff. currently still in the same position with a "right now buggy" and a "someday dream project"

this red buggy was an early attempt to replace the silver car. had some nice parts on it and was "complete"... package deal with the trailer (still have the trailer)
but the motor had been full of water (stinger exhaust during rainstorm) and was basically trash. I ended up finding a different project and selling this buggy off to a friend cheap

ok THIS one is a fun one
found this years ago - old stadium car?

a guy in lake Elsinore purchased 2 of these from the family of the original builders. they had never been built - just completed frames and body work that sat for 40 years. he built one, and got this one rolling but lost interest and sold it to me

i couldnt fit in it.

it had fiberglass seat in it - they cut the bottom of the seat out so that the seat cover could lay directly on the floor skin. you sat on your tailbone with your legs straight out in front of you. my head was still in the danger zone and might hit the top bars...

so i bent up a new top for the car that was tall enough to get a real seat and myself into

did a lot of work to that car- built a few front beam assemblies 100 percent from scratch.
-optimized the beam and suspension to the frame and worked over the steering geometry.
-custom leaf packs in the beam,
-2 inch longer arms
-modified link pin spindles

it was strapped and bump stopped @ 10 inches of travel, and that was without exceeding recommended limits of the leaf packs, and had zero binding issues with the tie rod ends.
i was really proud of the steering bump - with EVERYTHING correct, I had 10 inches of travel with only 1/16th inch steering bump on each side.

i had to move a few years ago and could no longer store this one - sold it to a buddy and made him swear rights of first refusal to me... if he ever wants to get rid of it i will be there with cash!
