For the love of God, WTF is this noise? It’s driving me nuts!

I’ve had this vibrating, clinking, clanking noise on this truck since I’ve had it and it’s driving me nuts! But, I have no idea what it is. It sounds like it’s coming from the flywheel area but everything appears to be tight. I didn’t know if anyone else has any ideas or has had the same noise before. It almost sounds like a loose bolt vibrating around but I can’t find anything.

Does the speed or tone change with rpm change? Does it still do it if you engage a gear?

Yes and then after a certain rpm, you can’t hear it. I don’t know if that’s because of the exhaust or if it just goes away?

Does it in and out of gear.

It certainly could be. I’d take the same video but with a couple of slow increases in rpms. Should be pretty apparent if you pull the inspection cover. The noise would get a lot louder.

What motor and trans?

Never mind. I just realized that the converter was spinning in the video. Hard to see on a phone.

My buddies blazer had a cracked flexplate. I was able to look up in there with a flashlight and see it. Hard to say for sure with cell phone audio but it
Sounded very similar.

This is where they crack most often..

A friend and I once drove to PA in his '68 Caddy ,and it clicked louder and louder all the way back home,it had a slight tick when we left, and just assumed it was a noisy lifter..car had that noise quite some time..
We were starting to worry it wasn't going to make it home, when it suddenly got much louder on Rt.81 ..thought it was a wrist pin or a lifter that ate a cam lobe in his 472,but when he got it home about 200 miles from there, he took it to a garage and they quickly pinpointed the noise,it was the flex plate..
Guy said it had about 3/8" left "connected",and it probably would have failed in a few more miles,or if we had given it sudden throttle to pass someone..:yikes:..

Definitely going to have to pull stuff.

Minimum will be converter bolts, driveshafts, bellhousing bolts, speedo, shift linkages. Trans cooler lines if you have one. Exhaust if you can’t drop trans/transfer case without doing it.

I’d do some more digging and exploring before I’d settle on flywheel cracks or bolts.

Unfortunately the transmission must be pulled back at least a few inches to allow your hands to get the bolts back in--and a wrench on them..those bolts have thin heads and are easily damaged..

I have done one flex plate replacement on an old Impala,I was able to put two long 3/8" bolts in place of the upper bell housing bolts and removed the rest, and took off the transmission mount bolts--I was able to pry the transmission back enough to get at the bolts, the drive shaft had enough slip yoke travel to let it go back just enough--on a 4x4 though, your going to either have to pull the transfer case off,or maybe get away with using a good jack on the crossmember to drag both back after unbolting it from the cross member and taking off the drive shafts..

Yeah,I would get one of those cameras with the fiber optic probe to get a good look up in that area, before going thru all that work for nothing possibly!..

Yep, I've done a couple of flex plates. Had one break a few years back. I just pulled the trans.

You could probably pull the motor forward enough once the bell housing bolts and motor mount bolts are out to get enough room to replace a flex plate..on a 4x4 ,it beats having to pull the t-case & tranny back,or completely out..

that's more work.

It's not a difficult job with a trans jack that can support the trans and T-case
I’ll have to see if I can come up with one of those. I’m also working with a broken dominate hand right now. Haha!

On top of that crap, I’m 99% sure I’ve got a blown head gasket now. I’ve got all the symptoms other than shit in the oil, at least not on the dipstick anyway.

I had a power steering pump bolt back out and gave me a similar sound that was a pain to find. The bolt backed out and was between the pulley and the bracket, so it was very hard to see. Just something to look at...
