For the love of God, WTF is this noise? It’s driving me nuts!

I had a power steering pump bolt back out and gave me a similar sound that was a pain to find. The bolt backed out and was between the pulley and the bracket, so it was very hard to see. Just something to look at...
I’ll double check but after looking like a moron in my driveway for about 15 minutes listening to the sound, I tracked it down to that area between the block and trans.

Go spend $50 at harbor freight. Get yourself a fiber optic handheld camera, a stethoscope, and an IR thermometer. All three will be invaluable diagnosing problems. Won’t need the thermometer, but sure is nice to have. Don’t forget to download the 20% coupon.

I had a noise in the same area that sounded like someone sticking something metal into a spinning fan blade. It ended up being my torque converter pushing the flex plate forward and bolts rubbing. For some reason too much pressure was building up. It caused my thrust bearing in the engine to fail. Ended up rebuilding both trans and engine. Hope that's not what it is.

The way my luck goes, that’s what it will be. That’s what the noise sounds like.

This is interesting...

I have a weird rattle from my power steering pump, pump still works and the rattle is 'inconsistent' at best...

I suppose I'll pull the pulley before I buy a pump.

When I crawled on top of the engine, I could just barely stick a screwdriver between the pulley and the bracket and move the bolt around. It was difficult to see but the rattle came and went, like you're describing. The pulley had wear marks all on the inside where the bolt had been bouncing around. I had to take the pulley off to get to it and thread the bolt back in place.

We had a few engines that were rebuilt in the machine shop at one parts store I worked at ,come bad with that failure--the customer blamed us for "screwing it up",but he also had the TH400 rebuilt at a transmission shop while the engine was out, and it was eventually determined that a kinked transmission cooler line had blocked nearly all flow to the cooler and that resulted in a pressure build up in the converter, the shop explained that makes the converter exert thrust against the crankshaft, especially under heavy loads like towing..
"Ballooning" was the word they used,I believe...the converter actually expands enough to push that hard on the crankshaft..

The guy's truck was a 2wd Dually with a 454,and he towed horse trailers with up to 6 horses at once from MA to KY and other states in between...despite being told it wasn't the fault of our machinist,he took my boss to small claims court, and the judge decided in the customers favor--so he had to either rebuild it again for free--or pay him to have another shop do it..my boss decided to have another shop do it for us,and pay them, that way it was their headache if it went sour again..never heard from the customer again..
