For those who use their K5s as Daily Drivers

I use my truck as a DD with no probs all i have to check on is the drive shaft UJs are greased up regally but over here at 7.20$ a gallon now it really hurts the pocket. /forums/images/graemlins/k5.gif

I did up until about 6 months ago. I drive 100 miles a day round trip. I was spending about $170 give or take a month on gas, plus repairs. This was before gas got to its highest.

I bought an Aveo to drive to work, and the K5 is now strictly "hunting truck" /forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif

"Drive it, that's what they were made for"

Oh hail yea! I drive my '88 almost every day. Fuel mileage sucks in town (about 10mpg) but since my last chip burn I am getting 20.45 mpg on the road!!!!!

I can testify about the U-joint thing, even with no lift and 33's I have to change mine out about once a year. Ya gotta love it when some idiot darts in front of you then looks in the mirror and sees nothing but bumper. LOL thier eyes get HUGE when they realize what they've just cut in front of! /forums/images/graemlins/rotfl.gif

I just bought my 88 K5 as a replacement DD for my 98 Cavalier. I have always wanted a K5 and my brother just got his license. So, he got the Cavalier and I got myself a new K5! I am currently in the process of a "quick" restoration of the truck to get it 100% DD worthy but I fully intend on wheeling the truck from time to time for fun. After reading the whole post, I consider myself lucky to be paying $1.76/gal for regular at the pump! /forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif

Well My K5 is on and off. A drive my 94 corsica on long trips but since I do not have a tow rig yet, I have to drive the k5 to all wheeling trips. It does mean I do have to be easy on her at times but I useually let someone go first before I tear through a mud hole or what not. /forums/images/graemlins/waytogo.gif /forums/images/graemlins/waytogo.gif

One thing I cant believe nobody mentioned is checking tire pressure and making sure the toe is right on.One or the other of those outa wack will eat front tires quickly driving every day.

I drove for two weeks one time with a bent tie rod and the wear to my front tires was noticeable.

I thought that was a given. If the alignments bad it will pull when you brake too.

With the locker out back , I keep swapping the tires around , so I wouldn't know the difference between tire wear from locker or frontend /forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif

47,000 miles and going and I haven't seen rear tires wear faster than fronts even with a locker back there. Driving habits buddy. /forums/images/graemlins/whistling.gif

I am getting good even wear , I just don't have a tire on one spot long enough to notice anything different . I drive like a grandma ....except for parking lot chirping action sometimes , and late for work right turn from a stop before the next car comes in the direction I'm turning light em up on accident-a-purpose action

just drive it!! as far as the valve covers go, I was gonna replace them with some stronger aluminum covers. Part of the problem with the "cheap" chrome covers, which were on the truck when i got it, is that the lip warps the tighter you try and get it. And then leak more.

The timing cover leak is only the front crank seal leaking. Not a huge job to do.

I was going to put the EFI from my 87 on the truck and dump the whole carb thing. But as things turned out I needed to sell it instead! Still wish I had that truck back. If you had more room to "hide" stuff, I found a wrecked 88 blazer that still ran for 500.00. But i got no more room at home!

My buddy and I both have lockers and there wearing out evenly. If you dont romp on it around every corner it should be fine.

I have DD mine for 4 years. Daily Driving sucks on gas, wears swampers extremely fast, tend to chirp the tires around every corner (detroit in back), and it's a pretty rough ride. Those are some cons, now a deffinite plus is seeing everyone admire your truck, especially the kids when they run up to their parents and yell "Daddy, a monster truck" /forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif

I'm in the exact opposite position you are. I am driving my Impala all over the place (including to the goose field and duck blind) until my 87 K5 is ready again. What year Impala do you have? Mine is a Black '96 with 204K miles. Still runs very strong. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif
