For those who wondered what happen to the 2500 suburban

I thought they used a heavier duty unit in the 2500's.
Maybe a 6L65 in the 1500, and a 6L90 in the 2500????

Hopefully someone can chime in on this. I'VE had the dealer doing some measureing and it seems from the measerments the trans is bigger and the t- case is the same as the 1500 :dunno:

In their "spec sheets" it does distinguish the two transmissions....

1/2 ton - Hydramatic 6 speed
3/4 ton - Hydramatic 6 speed heavy duty

Heavy-duty Suburban 2500 models offer a 6.0-liter V-8 rated at 352 horsepower and 382 lb.-ft. of torque. This larger engine is matched with a new, fuel-saving Hydra-Matic 6L90 six-speed automatic transmission.

The Suburban 1500 engines are backed by the fuel-saving Hydra-Matic 6L80 six-speed automatic transmission.

I mean the 2500, since I didn't specify. Is that still what you think.

Thanks

We have a 98 burb 1500 and they should never have made a 1500 burb or atleast put in 2500. Springs w it fully loaded its bottoming out. Or just saggin real bad plus the rear end ain't made for it

Speaking generally because I don't know the specs on the new suburban.

I have an 04' 2500 with the 8.1 and it's great but it does use gas pretty good. Traditional 4 speed. I did drive the 6.0L and felt it was working pretty hard to move that much metal around. The 8.1 is much snappier.....however it does like oil every 3000 miles and gets around 11 or 12 mpg.

Now, my friend has an 07' Escalade with the 6.2L and a 6 speed tranny. Although I believe it is based on the 1/2 ton suburban, he is very impressed! They have tuned that 6.2L so well and it sounds just like my 8.1. It also takes off (seat of pants feel) very similar to my 2500. He also tried (and does a lot) tow his 30' travel trailer with it and it does great! He tested it heading up I-70 into the pass pulling this thing and he was VERY impressed. He was coming from the Excursion V10 as a comparison.

Finally, his gas mileage. He got at least 18 mpg on criuse set at 80 mph. I think this has a lot to do with the 6 speed tranny.

I know they have tweeked these engines pretty good for power as well as gas mileage. Just keep in mind, I don't think gas is going to get cheaper over the next few years so be prepared for $3 - $3.50 gas as a norm for sure.

You can't compare the Caddy engine to a Chevy engine.
They are usually better power and better mileage.
I have been in the new Escalades with my BIL, that thing sounds and pulls nasty.
But I will never own them, they are too much money for what I get out of them.
To the OP, I was going to say go with whatever you find cheaper, and it looks like you got the cheaper 2500.:thumb:
I don't think you will regret it.
The gas mileage is the same between the 5.3 and 6.0 if you are driving them with the same load and same way.
And even if Rjfguiar thinks the 2500 will cost more on brakes and maintenance, remember that also means they will last longer if subjected to the same work load.
The only thing you will pay more for is the reg, and insurance, and I don't think it will be that much more, probably offset the price difference you paid on purchase.

We'll it's been awhile and the truck isn't in my position yet. Everything is installed. We clocked the transfer case and raised the body 4 in. and hopefully I like where I sit other wise I'm just going to get used to it. The truck is done and in FT wayne, IN I just have to find time to go get it and have my wheelchair lockdown and hand controls adjusted. This should take about a day. I have a teaser pic it doesn't show the wheelchair lift and the owner offered me a deal if he could haul it to Houston to put in a show down there this weekend, so I said heck yeah show it off and I'll take the discount. I can't come and get until the middle of September anyway. So here it is.

Looks real sharp and tasteful. Not over the top.......nice job!

That was my goal it's still my truck not my pimp'n ride. I do like things nice but also very functional.

Edit : Thanks for the compliment

I also like the fact that the wheels don't protrude the tire out too far. Some of the late model trucks when lifted, tend to shove those things out to get a bigger tire under there. I just think it proportionally looks wrong. Yours are tucked in there nicely with the added benefit of a larger tire. Good job! :waytogo:

Very nice. We almost picked up one until we got assigned to Germany. Couldn't take the wheeler so we didn't need the tow rig. After Aramp posted his up, I was very close to getting one.

I'd like to lift mine, but it's the wife's ride, so she has final say...and she says no. I always hated how GM trucks sit so low, especially for a 3/4 ton 4x4. Anyway...Looks badass man!
