Ford vs Chevy

And just what is the point of a faster (proper term would be quicker) truck? It's a truck, not a sports car.

There's already too many idiots driving their trucks too fast on the roads as it is. Every idiot that tailgates and weaves in and out of traffic at 90 mph on the highways in Texas is driving a PU truck. They really aren't the most stable vehicle to drive like that.

I'm happy with my slow K5...has plenty of power to go through mud, snow, water and up hills where those "fast" trucks can't go.

i only referenced that because the way it was originally worded made it sound like the truck was running a 1.5sec 0-60 which is not a happening thing.

I wasn't knocking your post, just stats like that about trucks...it's just weird that 0-60 and 1/4 mile times are now part of truck stats used in marketing and selling them.

would run the 0-60 1.5 sec FASTER THAN i hope you mean?

regardless, the only new trucks i would by are
diesel - cummins
gas - chevy 6.0/dodge 5.7

I hope you mean the old Cummins. These new 6.7L are the biggest pile of crap I've ever seen come from Cummins. They run great if you take the DPF and EGR system off of them, but good luck finding a shop that will do it. The 5.9L Cummins is a great motor, but this new stuff is joke:haha:.

In my job, I drive Fords and Chevy's. I really like the Ford SD's. Whether it is the TD or gasser, they are just better driving. Our fleet is all crew cab, with some being 4x4 and some 2x4, and most are longbeds. None of the GM's are diesel. But apples to apples, crew cab longbed gasser 4x4, I like the Fords over the Chevys. I've owned Fords before and all had issues, but never bad enough to prevent me from owning another one. Hell, I chose a Navigator (dressed up and rebadged Expedition) over a Trailblazer simply because the Nav drove better and was roomier.

I cant say anything about Dodge. The only Dodge truck I've ever owned/driven is the motorhome which also happens to be the only Mopar I've owned. Driven a few Mopar cars/minivans, but never any trucks.

Why would you want a shop to remove these items? This forum is about building and working on rigs, not just driving them. It is not hard to remove them and you are correct that they will run much better without the EGR and the DPF, however, as with all new technology there is going to be a period of time where things need to be ironed out. The Allison tranny was not all that when first put in behind the D-max. Heck, even the D-max motor has had its share of issues. Fords turbo diesel program has been riddled with problems since the demise of the 7.3. It can happen to any vehicle manufacture. The new Cummins is hardly a joke, it may have had some issues but, I think you will be hard pressed to find another motor that will flat out last it, out work it, and out tow it. It really is not the motor it is the EPA crap on it.

LT.

Because the average guy could not remove the DPF or the EGR system without having a cumputer and the program to go in and change things around in the ECMs. And no a programer will not do these things. Ford has been running the DPFs and in 10 months I have only changed one of them on a Ford. I've changed countless numbers on the Dodges. I agree the 6.0 has problems as does the 6.4. The new Cummins does have plenty of power, but until Cummins can figure out why these engines are going through DPFs, EGR coolers, and turbos they are unreliable.

well i own a 2008 silverado z-71 crew cab... LOVE IT...
love the ride, handling and power (5.3L)

i have lost only 1 race - i know it is a truck but ill try even in a chevette...

i cant stand when people get out of line to get next to you to merge left... they say.. hey a pickup.. ill just get in front of him...

well the only guy to do so was a mustang gt (newer one) and i had no chance.. the guy thought it was gonna be a cake walk.. light changed and he was taking a drag of his cig.. i slammed the gas and my tires screamed!!! he let the clutch out hard and had to quickly reach for the shifter, slam gear and pull away... was funny...

last week it was wet out.... guy did same thing... but light turned and he was already moving.. I hit it and spun the tires.. let up... turned knob to auto and mashed the gas... i litterally felt the front GRAB and pull me past that nissan pathfinder.... a newer one too... was funny as hell cuz then i slowed down to the speedlimit..

i know 2 @ss moves by a 37 year old... once the warranty is up (another 80k miles... grrrr) rebuild and super charger, lift and 36' hawgs go under it..... :woot:

now i wished i had a 2500hd duramax.. but for what i payed.. i cant touch anything.. f-150, titan, tundra, ram.....spankin new got her DIRT CHEAP!!!!

hell when i first bought it... my camaro (1996) lost the driveshaft... stripped at the splines.. gonna happen with 204k miles and no grease fittings.... bought the truck... manual said dont tow for first 500 miles... well i had a uhaul trailer with a camaro on it with 34 miles... at a light someone did the same thing... well only 1 car passed.. as i let them... but no one else got in.. they all slowed down and got behind...

note: above stupid statements are lessons to be learned of why there are idiots on the road.. and while 99% of the time I let them be idiots.. sometimes i fall into it and become the IdiOt!!!!

i was going to say the same thing as LT.

FWIW, i have a dodge charger (latemodel 06.. 5.7L hemi).
its very far from stock. .. well, it was, i just put i back to stock to sell it :)

but removing EGR was simple, you can even buy the blockoff plate directly from Mopar, lol, for like 5%.
a Diablosport predator tuner to disable the EGR in the computer.
and BAM youre done.
you can even pass inspection with it turned off.

i dont know much about the new cummins. but .. its a cummins! i spec their Generators for building back up power. theyre 10x better than the competion and have an amazing track record.

the problem is the ccomputers in the cars these days. theyre making everything a bitch

I know its an older model, but my dad has an 07 F150 4x4 that he DD's. Truck has 102 or 103,000 miles on it. Its been a damn good truck, no problems, no interior rattles (truck is driven up and down county roads every day). I would buy a new F150 just based on what i have seen from his truck. Just my experience

OK, my turn. I am issued, for work, a 2008 Ford F250 SD 4x2 longbed with the 5.4l gasser. The damn thing does every thing I need it to do. THe company pays for all the gas and I get to use it for ALL my personal use too. As many of you have seen in the Pacific Region, I tow my fully loaded k5 to most of the trail runs we do and it pulls it great. Even pulled great for sea level up to Big Bear, Ca that includes an 8000' pass (i believe it's 8K). One of the aspects i like about my ford is that it has the tow/haul mode on the column shift and it make towing and stopping so nice. Sure a diesel would be nice to do the towing, etc but I don't feel a diesel is always necessary. I'm real curious to see how the new ford 6.2l gasser is.

And for those that are died in the wool chevy guys or ford guys........get over it. Most of the arguments I hear from these people are nonsense. Every make and model from all manufactures have their pros and cons.

Supposed to a be a beast. Shaft mounted rockers, heads that flow almost exactly or a bit better than an LS3 (well into the 300 range), and finally has some displacement. Read somewhere that they are used in the Ford Raptor R race trucks, and I believe the only changes were better exhaust and more aggressive cams, bumping it to 500hp.

Another note, a 7.0L version of it was tested, known as "777" standing for 7.0 Liters, 700hp, 7000rp,

well good for you and your slow k5, i will be using this as an all around daily truck for towing and driving to work and having fun on the weekends so power is something i would like to have. My slow k5 will be there when i need to go through mud, snow, water and up hills where those "fast trucks" cant go.

dont blame trucks for people driving like ****, i see mini vans and preluds do the same thing. going "quicker" as you put it is due to the fact that maybe some people cant afford a corvette and a truck so i would like to have the truck that can get as close to both as possible for my needs.

Same could be said for why do you need all that power in a sports car? no roads out there have a high enough speed limit to let you enjoy every ounch of power coming from that motor, but there is a lot you can do between 0-75 that can always put a smile on your face.

Driving slow and taking it easy is fine when i have had a rough day or just feel like being a sunday driver but 90% of the time i like to feel the truck launch and look over at the mustang next to me falling behind because in the end it just makes me feel good.

but all that aside if we are going to get into debate of "well why do you need a quicker truck"

Quicker means more power to weight ratio depending on the vehicle.

Quicker means that more power if not 100% of it is being transmitted to the real wheels on my command.

why is that important?

Quicker means that when im coming down the off ramp, i actually am getting up to speed like i should be and not holding up traffic

Quicker means that when towing i can get my load moving faster due to the fact that all things working together (engine power, transimission and gearing) are allowing me to.

Quicker means that if i feel like taking it to the local drag strip and entering it in the stock compedition i can maybe get down the strip "QUICKER" than the truck next to me. (yes they do have truck drags even though its not a sports car)

In the end being quicker has a lot more to do with just being stupid and cutting in and out of traffic like all the PU truck drivers in texas do

its more of the question of why is a stock ford quicker than a stock chevy for the same price and which one should i go with because being quicker than the competion's brand plays a big part in who im gonna give my money to, along with the other parts of the truck.

Lastly you can never have to much horsepower. even if its not a sports car

anybody drove the 6.2 in the chevy yet? i know my 5.3 sucks cause of the torque managment but i wonder if they changed it on the 6.2

Lastly you can never have to much horsepower. even if its not a sports car

no need to get bent out of shape about it...i just don't see the need to have a "quick" pickup truck like they put out these days...it's gone a little overboard

quick and having the torque to pull and haul something are not necessarily the same thing thing...i can pretty much pull and tow just as much with my 64 chevy pu with a straight six

i didn't blame the trucks for the idiots driving like idiots...it's just that the idiots seem to buy and drive them that way...just don't see the need to add to it with more horsepower on unstable vehicles

a pickup truck is not really the most stable vehicle to drive 90 mph weaving in and out of traffic...i've never had the need to drive my trucks like a sports car

i may have gone a little over board but it just rubbed me the wrong way.

your 64 may get the load moving but how long does it take you to get up to speed? the horsepower and torque in the new trucks is what leads to quicker acc and being able to maintain that speed while towing.

the horsepower and torque added to these new trucks is for towing and hauling, the added benefit is having that power when its unloaded.

the idiot drivers dont need a high powered truck to weave in and out of traffic like a moron, an 80's amc eagle or a geo metro hell even a chevy lumina can do the same thing, all of these are unstable, a corvette is unstable at those speeds if the driver cant handle the car. so again dont blame the power in the trucks for the idiots, they will be just as unstable no matter what they are driving because they cant handle a vehicle safely at those speeds.

again you keep saying you dont have the need for your vehicles to have power, thats fine, but other people do and in a truck power is needed in every aspect of what the purpose of the truck is. taking the truck and doing more with the truck than what is was intended for is perfectly fine if done properly (drag strip)

the great things about trucks today is the ability to use the truck to its full potential. your 64 is great for towing with that straight six, but its gonna take forever, and then what else is the truck good for? thats about it.

todays trucks have towing, comfort, and peformance all wrapped up into a decent looking package (depending on the make) your getting more for what you pay for than you were on an old truck.

you could say the same for lets say, navigation in a truck. you dont need it but someone else might like the option if they travel a lot, what if it wasent there? then they would have to go buy a hand unit(granted much cheaper but to all its credit the built in one has more goodies to it)

the point is, dont knock something just cause you personally dont need it. i could say why do you need a 4x4? we have paved roads for a reason stay on them. You would say, you enjoy the outdoors.

My argument is the same, i like a truck that has it all, comfort and the ability to tow what i need to, but also hell its fun to smoke the tires every so often and blow the ricer off the line.

i like more power just like anyone else...

i just think it's weird that pickup trucks are marketed in terms of 0-60 and 1/4 mile times these days...things like the Hemi Dodge pickups and Jeeps are the ones that come to mind...just marketing

you are right, any idiot can weave in and out of traffic in any POS...we just have a real problem with people in pickups on the highways here in Texas driving like idiots, and we don't need more of them

all i'm saying is power for getting up to speed and hauling and pulling loads is one thing, but a pickup with lots of "quickness" is not the most stable vehicle to be driving at high speeds, and especially with no load in the back too...no weight on the the rear wheels where all that power is going

marketing power for hauling is great, but marketing for hauling a$$ is different

i do agree with your points about getting up to speed with a load
