Well, the input shaft to my steering box is stripped. I noticed a couple of "pops" in the steering recently that had me concerned. Since I'm in the middle of swapping in my hydro clutch, I figured it's a good time to check this out since I have the steering wheel out. :doah: Ugh.

Anyway, what's the best way for me to fix this? Just get a new box off of CL? Will a box from a gas truck work with my diesel truck? I have hydro boost brakes.

:yikes:

Also, what's this joint called, as it needs to be replaced too. You can see the splines are smoothed out on the upper part of the photo.

thanks in advance. :waytogo:

This problem has me a bit :(

Well, I just chatted with a guy I found on CL and he's got a box off of a diesel rig and the associated collar thing. $40. Not too bad. Just wish I didn't have to pull the damn steering box now too. Ugh. :(

But, praise God, it's a pretty straightforward fix, I suppose. :) :thumb:

Yup, easy fix! Might want to get your wife to give ya a hand with starting the bolts while you hold the steering box in place. Its kinda of a pain in the butt to do by yourself...

And for future reference, there is no difference between a gas and diesel as far as the steering box is concerned. Just a difference between 2wd and 4x4, and a difference between 73-80 and 81+ steering boxes with regards to the fittings used on the hydraulic hoses (double flare for the earlier ones, saginaw o-ring type fitting for the newer ones). There is some difference in the steering rates etc in the earlier ones, but I am not sure of the year range splits.

It's easy... :thumb:

That happened because the pinch bolt was either missing or loose. Make sure when you swap boxes that the pinch bolt gets tightened good.

The splits are actually:

67-76 (larger 36 spline input, flare fitting hoses)
77-79 (smaller 30 spline input, flare fitting hoses)
80-91 (smaller 30 spline input, o-ring hoses)

If you were closer, I have an extra box for you but it would just be too much to ship....dang! Anyways, $40 is bad!

Thread Jack: Chris, are you open tomorrow??

I've shipped a steering box in a flat rate box for $15.00 before. :deal:

That's a pretty good deal!

I bought a new box from a CK5 member and he shipped it for $24........

Showed up with a little oil in the box and foam but otherwise, OK. It worked and that's all that matters!:thumb:

Now I have an extra one that leaks a little but would work for someone out there.....

Did the box come from someone in Sacramento? I thought I remember seeing a for sale post and that is the person I sold it to and it would be an AGR box but didn't have the bling bling covers on it?

thanks guys. I picked up that box from a local fellow this afternoon. nice enough guy too, and he showed me how to adjust the steering slop with the adjustment screw in the box. pretty cool. didn't know they had an adjustment... never have been able to see mine through all the grease. :D

I'd like to do an xj shaft, but for now I just gotta get the damn thing going again. hoping to take it work on monday (construction stuff), and would rather not have to utilize the roof rack on the car... plus, we'd have to figure out how to share it just right to make our jobs work out. :D

Colby! Be really careful when playing with the lash adjustment on a steering box! If you don't get it just right, you can wind up with a box that gets stuck in certain positions under certain (usually undesirable) situations

Yea, I think so if I recall correctly.

The fellow indicated that if I didn't set it up right, I wouldn't get any feed back and the steering wheel won't come back to center like you'd expect. Is that the only thing you're thinking of, or is there another thing I should take into consideration?

Colby. if you mess with the sector shaft adjustment (on the top cap) and you get it too tight the steering WILL NOT go beyond center. It is the most critical adjustment.

any directed reading on the subject if I decide to mess with it? I probably won't, but if the steering is loose I might like to try.
