Well there's people who use raw power and rpms to get where they have to go, then there's others who use finesse and idle rpms to accomplish the same thing

Since my /forums/images/graemlins/k5.gif doesn't go off-road here's what I have seen....

While down in Paragon this fall, there was quite a few /forums/images/graemlins/k5.gif with BIG Horses under the hood. I watched Mike, Josh, Boss and the rest of them on the nasty trails, and can't recall anyone mashing the pedal. Well, cept Josh, but he kept flooding...They weren't running 1/2 but seems to me with they would have been handeling the gas the same way regardless. I'm not too sure how safe it would have been, had they been hell-bent in the throttle control department. The trails they were on were hard to walk up, let alone drive a vehicle of this size, height etc.. up.

My /forums/images/graemlins/k5.gif WAS 3/4 but when I bought it I gave the guy back his 3/4 axles for the tires/rims...didn't need 3/4, perfectly happy with the 1/2 ...I still can't see why everyone here can't just deal with the fact that we all have different opinions, and buid/buy our trucks for different reasons. There really is no right way to build your truck, you build it for how you want to, not how the guy across the country wants you to.

Thumper, Waxer,

You both have valid points. After I got my '90 Jimmy I started looking at lifts and bigger tires. With 3.73's 33-35's were about the limit to maintain decent performance, and those weren't nearly big enough. After considering gears and axles for 10b's or swapping to a 14B/4.56/Detroit and a 60 w/4.56 all in running order, it became no contest.

As a bonus, when my stuff becomes junk, I can sell the d60 & 14b for more than the vehicle is worth. It is hard to beat an investment like that. As a bonus, the 60/14 are the only part of the Jimmy my teenage son has failed to tear up. On a good day, he has been know to tear up a square foot of air. /forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif

UH!!!! /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif

I want to do the IFS and crank up the torsion bar too! /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif

Can you do a write up on this.... PLease /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I'd rather have a Dana 60 and never NEED it rather than break something at a critcal time and WISH I had one. /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

that is exactly why im upgrading on my hoe, i break the front 10bolt way too often.

BUT thats only if I start looking for tougher trails or locations to wheel on. My location doesnt have anything that I cant travel through or over right now so why spend the $$

why do so many people make a statement like this.
it makes no sence at ALL

a 60 will not make a vehicle go any more places a 44 or 10 bolt will.

think about it.

all you are gaining is RELIABILITY.
if the 44 doesnt puke it will go anywhere a 60 will even further if the slightly better ground clearance or lighter weight is needed.
the difference is how hard you are working the parts.
the 1/2 ton 3/4 ton stuff is on borrowed time with bigger heavier tires, the 60 is overbuilt for 44" tires on a lightly loaded play truck

the reason to spend the money is it makes zero $$$ sence to repair a 1/2 ton axle if you are going to run tires in the 38"+ range, it is throwing money away that could be put towards hard parts better suited to the task.

there is no conspiracy to trick everyone into wanting a 60.
it is simply the path of least resistance to reliability.
a grand is CHEAP! a good percentage that bitch about the cost have no complaints about dropping more then that in useless stereo systems.
if you start the conversion process prior to destroying your 1/2 ton stuff you can recoup a good chunk of change from its sale, wait til after it grenades and you have nothing to sell.

no egos or oneupmanship involved in this topic from the 1-ton side IMO

now if you run 35" or smaller tires a 60 is a waste of money IMO. this seems to be the magic line thou I have watched my friends change a lot of d44 shafts with 35" bfgs and alcohol combined.
everyone that has done the 1-ton conversion has BTDT with the 1/2 3/4 stuff so pretty hard to convince them to go back to the hassles

1600 for the D60/14ff combo but mine came w/ 456 gears and detroits so it wasnt a bad deal overall.

No kidding...
I can live without toons knowing I wont have to change out axle shafts to make it back out...

Now I gotta get a dana 60...

Ok, reading all your posts on the 60 vs. 44 I, think you rich Dana 60 owners should all chip in a buy me a 60. I’m running with a 44 and now I’m afraid to even back it out of the driveway in fear of losing an axle…And can you believe how many Dana 44 are on the road today, I don’t have any numbers but, I would bet there are a lot more of them then Dana 60’s. So come on you Dana 60er Get me a real front axle… /forums/images/graemlins/k5.gif

RICH ?!?! hah ! i am rich by no definition , you just have to look really hard . i have 2 60s , one ford that i got for 80$ plus some machine work for a friend and the other for 1500 with a cucv attached to it , complete with 11,000 miles almost like new , just needs a 6.2 . i have a 60 ff rear you can have for 150 /forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif

In future if your opinion is general click reply to the original poster.

That is confusing, I've had a couple people use my post to reply to the originator. Also, hows the 1st person suppost to know when they have new messages if you use the last one on the list?
Anyways, I'm shopping for a 3/4-1ton in the junk yard, hopefully I'll come up with something. Otherwise I have a 3/4 ton 14bolt in the garage and a $125 D44 coing in Dec maybe!? Eitherway Parts are parts and less I spend the more save for future upgrades!

I'm building a 14FF right now, but no luck finding a dana 60 in so cal (for a cheap price). But I'm looking all hte time. Tell me more about the fo*d dana 60? I thought the pumkin was on the drivers side?

the diff is on the pass side but i also got the np205 out of the same truck and i am building a reduction box to go in front of it .
