Fram oil filters

Fram should be allowed to sell the junk that they do. The problem is that so many auto parts stores carry the Fram for the largest selection.

GM is not that much better. They need to bring back the old pf35s. I know they have the classic pf35 but I'm not sure it is as good as the old pf35s.

I see Wix as they best choice now. made in NC. These are like the old pf35s.
 
it's got NOTHING to do with selection... WIX makes every filter that Fram does... it has to do with marketing and the cheap sheep of this country that flock to Wallyworld and Autozone..
 
I know it's not GM, but we've seen Titans and Armadas with Fram and Penzoil filters on them making a squealing sound while running. People freak out when you tell them the filters were starving they're engine for oil, or they don't believe you until we put a factory filter on them and the noise is gone. We put Nissan filters on the Nissans, but we carry the WIX for the used cars, and it's what's on my GM's.
 
Didn't Fram have an ad campaign.."Pay me now and pay me double later."
Or something like that...At one of my wix dealers, they have a display with wix, fram, bosch, porlator cut...they show why wix is better than all of them..
 
i was actually in a class where an independent Company did some filtration testing (6 brands) and oil testing and showed us all the results.

I learned the most from that class but ill keep it simple

Fram Spends the most of all filter companys but makes the worst product....and they are the most expensive normaly

FRAMS ALL SUCK PERIOD

Wix, Baldwin and Bosch are all pretty good.
 
Champion makes Mobil One and K&N...they use a synthetic filter instead of paper and have a larger filter surface area.
They claim the synthetic filter with larger surface area filters better AND allows more flow.
nanofiber filter media......
 
Just read another thread on this same subject yesterday.
Showing the filters cut apart for comparision,WOW.The Fram filters materials and construction are piss poor.
Sure opened my eyes the oil filters:eek1:
 
Napa Gold or WIX for me. If for some reason I can't find one of those I will run to the nearest Mobil 1, K&N, or ACDelco dealer.
All of my filters are pretty much whatever NAPA sells. Do have the lower line NAPA oil filter on The Blazer right now though. Last minute rush purchase. Needs an oil change again though and I have TWO NAPA Golds sitting on the bench.

Just had a discussion about this (though very brief) with my Uncle. 60+ years old, hasn't spun his own wrenches in decades, has owned probably over 100 cars over the years and LOTS of muscle and cool stuff. I made a comment about oil filters and he went "FRAM ALWAYS!" and I just laughed. Looked at me funny and I explained the lack of quality anymore and he sorta went on about using them for years and were great back in the day and I just countered with, "they were great back in the day, not any more".
He doesn't keep a vehicle longer than 3 years so not a big issue for him anyway.
 
just like Champion and Accel where/are, living off their name... tho I can't testlfy to Fram ever being high quality, they've been sh*t for a LONG time now...
 
old news..... Frams suck... trust me, I've cut open quite a few that customers have installed.... we pretty much only run WIX, Napa Gold (same) and Mercruiser filters...

i use and have used Fram (now fram tough guard) on ALL of my vehicles.... im even down to the pennziol oil to go with it...

i have NEVER had an issue..so yeah i hear the quality isnt as good as others.. but fram is still making them so they didnt go out of business on cheap filters......

all of my vehicles have had an oil change @ 3K miles.. no exception... other than the 05 and 08 I do not change until the light comes on.. instructions say DO NOT CHANGE IF LIGHT IS NOT ON... so i dont...

1994 cavalier - bought as demo with 7k and got rid of at 34k
1986 rustang - bought with 75k miles and got rid of at 119k for the camaro
1986 camaro z-28 - bought with 90k miles and got rid of it at 145k
1996 camaro - started with 3 miles and got to 204, 500 - still driven as i gave it away to my neice
1996 gmc jimmy - started used with 48k miles and ended with 145k miles traded in on a trailblazer
2005 trailblazer - 10 miles and now has 55k miles still wifes DD
2008 silverado - 5 miles and now has 25k miles and my DD


im also now switching to fram tough guard on everything i own.. and pennzoil synthetic.
I didnt believe in synthetic but i now get 40-50 more miles out of a tank in the silverado..... but oil costs more.. but is a wash then
 
See the whole oil change interval thing is why the bypass filter is so great. I will put one on my 454 when I get it done, one reason is I am going to run a rather expensive oil that is produced like oil was back in the 80s with all the extra stuff.

Send your oil off to be sampled every 5 to 7k, a guy I four wheel with put one on his tow rig, started doing the sampling thing, his oil went 45k before it needed a change. All amsoil synthetic, with the amsoil bypass filter and amsoil oil filter. He figured it out once and it saved him a substantial amount of money over just normal oil and filter changes.

Please explain more. What is the bypass filter and were do you get the 80's oil?
 
its not a by-pass filter..the by-pass is part of the oilfilter adapter..i.e. the thing the filter threads onto..it by-passes the filter if its stopped up, i'm not sure when they started using the by-pass adapter, but the 327 in my 68 c10 didn't have a by-pass on it but it did when it went back into the truck.
 
what I am talking about is a bypass filter setup, called such I assume because it contains two filters, one that is a normal filter, the other is the bypass filter.

The bypass filter will filter smaller particles than will a normal oil filter, but it is limited in the amount of oil it can filter. Your normal full flow filter does its job of taking care of bigger particles but it is also limited because of the amount of flow restriction it can create.

The bypass filter takes care of very small particles but cannot maintain enough volume to constantly supply the engine. Some of the flow of the oil is directed into the bypass filter for "deep filtering", the rest is directed to the normal full flow oil filter.

Most places say a bypass filter will filter all the oil in an engine in about 10 minutes of normal operation.



So 2 filters, one a full flow normal oil filter, the other a much different filter designed to capture substantially smaller particles than the full flow filter.
 
I run the AC Delco brand oil filters and just recently changed over to the Pentius brand filters. I've been running them on my DD s10 now for a 13k miles or so.

I was in the same shop a few weeks ago and saw some of the pentius filters sitting out. I asked if they cut one of those open too. The one guy laughed and pointed to one of the filters. It had already been cut. I looked at it and was a bit surprised at the quality. (glad is more like it, cause I run them) They aren't mentioned anywhere in the links or talk in this thread. This isn't my picture, just something I found. I'm pretty sure the one I looked at was the same. Here's what they look like cut open. Not sure who makes them, but seems reasonable to say it's still better than Fram.
