Frame mounted Fuel pump vs in tank

Just measured my tank and it is 12 inches. Looks like I am going to need to pull my pump and sending unit and head over to the parts store to see what they have close

From the pics I can find, looks like a 2002 Silverado has a deeper tank than the Tahoe, but the images aren't from the same angle, so can't tell 100%. Perhaps there were different tank sizes offered...

  • Dimensions 28 3/4" X 28 1/8" X 10 3/4"
That is the dimensions of the factory tank so looks like the tahoe would work

10 3/4 is the 25 gallon tank, the 31 is 12 3/4 from what I see.

Which one do you have?

Just a FYI, I had a walbro intank pump for a Camaro mounted to a Tbi sending unit running a lm7 that burned up in like 3 weeks. Called walbro and they said they had a quality issue with their 225LP pumps for a while that caused premature failure

Well, that is very interesting. That is the pump I had in there. Did they do anything for you? This has less than 1000 miles on it

Yeah after some arm twisting and hair pulling I got my money refunded after I sent it back to them. Kinda a headache and not real happy with their customer service. I was prolly pretty biased tho, I had just put a fuel pump in the truck then had to drop the tank in the drive way and replace it lol

I swapped to an ACdelco replacement from a local parts house and it worked like a dream. I believe it was from a 96-98 Chevy 1500. Only like 80 bucks I think

Removed my old walbro pump today. Decided to cut the floor and remove that way. So much easier and quicker than dropping the tank.

Ignore the tape. Those were initial measurements but when I drilled the corners and dropped a drill bit through I could see they didn't line up all that well

I also have a storage box that goes on top so not too worried about the hole in the floor. Leaving one side in place too enables me to just told it back and forth.

The stock sending unit only measured 10.5. Should hopefully just be drop in with the new pump

Are the locking rings the same on the new sending unit you're using vs the old one? I've seen a couple of guys use the newer style but they've always had to use an adapter ring of some kind. Looking forward to seeing how you figure this out since I'm going to need the same setup for my CA swap when the time comes.

That is the unknown. I am gonna have to figure it out as I see it. I also ordered some press fittings for the pump to fuel lines. I was researching pumps and came across the Silverado pumps which were about $100 cheaper than the Tahoe pump which is about $100 cheaper than the Camaro pump. They all look pretty identical. Not sure what the difference is. They all need to produce the same PSI

Besides the different installed heights I'm not too sure what the differences are between the different sending units. Hopefully the one you got will be a drop in though. In case it isn't, here's a thread from 67-72chevytrucks that shows a couple of ways to adapt the newer sending unit to the older tanks (check out post 204 page 9 and 230 page 10) http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/showthread.php?t=627161&page=9

yea, the tanks in the link you posted were gen 1. I was hoping 73-87 would be larger opening

so the pump wouldnt fit as the opening in the tank was too small. I ended up just sticking a stock pump back in. I returned the pump to Amazon and they didn't want it back so it is sitting on my work bench. I am thinking about picking up a 31 gallon tank and cutting it to fit this pump and sticking that in the truck. At this point, I have the truck back up and running with the stock tank and pump.

There is an adapter ring you can purchase that will help install the new pump and that is what I am probably gonna go with. I need to check the flow rate of the tahoe pump to make sure it can keep up with the HP I have now too.
